Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is reportedly suffering from short-term memory loss following his 480km/h crash in a jet-powered car last month.
Co-presenter James May told a British newspaper that Hammond still has a long way to go to recover from the brain injury he suffered in the accident, but that the memory loss is not as drastic as it sounds.
"That was expected and perfectly normal," he said. "It's short-term memory. He knows who people are, his wife and kids, but he forgets that he talked to me that morning, or whatever.
"The last time I spoke to him I was easily on the phone with him for 45 minutes. We were having a good laugh about his memory actually.
"He was saying he'd had macaroni cheese in hospital and he was excited because he hadn't had it for 20 years. And then he thought maybe he'd had it yesterday, but he wasn't sure!"
Hammond is in a private clinic near Bristol and will not be going home for some time yet.
"He's not better – even with the best will in the world – but his prognosis is very good," said May. "We just have to wait."
