-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC sailed past midweek with another Wednesday victory courtesy of Dancing With the Stars, but the debut of lead-out Day Break was certainly no Lost. The season-finale of Dancing With the Stars kicked up its heels with a mammoth 27.22 million viewers and a 7.0 rating/18 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that almost beat the four competing networks combined in total viewers. But despite the lead-in support (and an ample promotional campaign), the two-hour debut of drama Day Break dipped to 10.54 million viewers with a 3.7/ 9 among adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m., with a loss of audience in every half hour. Take a look:
Day Break (ABC): premiere
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 13.96 million (#2), A18-49: 4.5/11 (#2)
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 10.18 million (#2), A18-49: 3.6/ 9 (#2)
10:00 p.m. Viewers: 9.43 million (#3), A18-49: 3.5/ 9 (#3)
10:30 p.m. Viewers: 8.57 million (#3), A18-49: 3.2/ 9 (#3)
Do the math, and Day Break declined by a staggering 5.39 million viewers and 29 percent among adults 18-49 from the 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. half-hours, with overall retention out of Dancing With the Stars of just 39 percent in total viewers and 53 percent among adults 18-49. Comparably, the season-finale of Lost in the week-ago time period averaged 17.15 million viewers with a 7.0/17 among adults 18-49 from 9-10 p.m., followed by dud The Nine at 7.22 million viewers and a 2.8/ 8 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Year-ago occupants Lost (Viewers: 21.87 million; A18-49: 9.2/22) and Invasion (Viewers: 10.32 million, 18-49: 4.2/11) rated considerably higher on Nov. 16, 2005. While no one expected Day Break to maintain levels from the inflated Dancing With the Stars, this is considerably worse than anyone would have imagined.
Opposite Day Break was the two-hour season-premiere of NBC’s relocated Medium, with a respectable 9.43 million viewers (#3) and a 3.7/10 among adults 18-49 (#2) from 9-11 p.m. Although Day Break had more viewers, the positive news for Medium (which I still think would be better off back in the Monday 10 p.m. hour) was growth out of lead-in The Biggest Loser (Viewers: #4, 6.31 million; A18-49: #4, 2.8/ 7) of an overall 3.12 million viewers and 32 percent among adults 18-49.
Over at CBS, the network was wise to give Jericho an upcoming rest given the freshman drama slid to 9.41 million viewers (#2) and a 3.0/ 8 (#2) among adults 18-49. But that did not negatively impact lead-out Criminal Minds, which won the 9 p.m. hour with 16.56 million viewers and a 4.9/13 among adults 18-49. Comparably, however, Criminal Minds did not benefit without ABC’s Lost in the time period. CSI: NY, meanwhile, remains on a solid roll at 10 p.m. with a dominant 15.99 million viewers and a 5.1/14 among adults 18-49.
Elsewhere, FOX drama Bones, one of the few series currently working on the network, opened the evening with a respectable 7.89 million viewers (#3) and a 2.9/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#3). That led into a repeat of Bones at a fourth-place 5.74 million viewers and a 2.0/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was still up by a significant 2.20 million viewers and 33 percent among adults 18-49 from The O.C. one week earlier (Viewers: 3.54 million, A18-49: 1.5/ 4 on Nov. 8).
America’s Next Top Model on the CW was a bit softer than usual, meanwhile, with a last-place 4.67 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 among adults 18-49, followed by One Tree Hill at a typically lackluster 3.25 million viewers and a 1.3/ 3 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. Although the strength of the The CW’s Wednesday line-up lies in the young female demos, erosion of 1.42 million viewers and 41 percent among adults 18-49 for One Tree Hill out of America’s Next Top Model puts it as a looser.
