Dummy's Guide: Understanding US Ratings
Know the numbers, where's it from and what it means. Not sure how it works. Read this Dummy Guide...
Biggest Winner:
Desperate Housewives (ABC)
With its final all new-broadcast for the year (will return Mid-January), ABC hit high numbers again with Desperate Housewives which was able to dramatically improve on it’s lead in from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, in both demos and viewers. NFL Football (FOX) also reached high numbers and impressive male demos, however being it an overrun into primetime means it can't make Biggest Winner title!
Biggest Loser:
The War At Home (FOX)
Expect the axe to swing past this sitcom which is slammed by critics and avoided by viewers. The numbers keep declining and battles to retain it’s audience. Another noteable mention is also The OT Football show which battled to retain appx. 50% of its whopper lead in from NFL Football which drew 21.10 Million Viewers!

-Ratings Breakdown:
Without Cold Case and Without A Trace in the competitive mix, ABC dominated in both total viewers and key adults 18-49 on this final Sunday of the Nov. 2006 sweeps. CBS and Fox shared the No. 2 spot, with CBS second in total viewers and the home of The Simpsons a competitive second among adults 18-49.
Fox opened the evening in the dominant position care of an estimated half-hour NFL Football overrun (Viewers: 21.10 million; A18-49: 8.0 rating/22 share) and post-game show The OT (Viewers: #3, 10.82 million; A18-49: #1, 4.3/11) from 7-8 p.m. The two veterans of the hour -- CBS’ 60 Minutes (Viewers: #2, 13.03 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 6) and America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC (Viewers: #3, 11.09 million; A18-49: #2, 3.2/ 8) -- shared the No. 2 and 3 spots. The football pre-game on NBC (Viewers: #4, 6.36 million; A18-49: #4, 2.3/ 6) and two episodes (repeat and original) of Reba on the CW (Viewers: avg. 3.30 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 3) capped off the hour. Worth noting for Reba was the original installment at 3.89 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 in the demo at 7:30 p.m. -- a hefty advantage over earlier season time period occupant All of Us.
At 8 p.m., ABC’s young adult skewing Extreme Makeover: Home Edition won the hour with 14.66 million viewers and a 5.1/12 among adults 18-49. The prime time portion of Sunday Night Football on NBC (Philadelphia vs. Indianapolis) averaged an approximate 13.14 million viewers and a 5.0/12 among adults 18-49 in the 8-11 p.m. block.
Also in the 8 p.m. hour was CBS’ The Amazing Race 10 (Viewers: #4, 9.87; A18-49: #4, 3.3/ 8), which was nothing special this week; Fox’s animated The Simpsons (Viewers: #3, 10.90 million; A18-49: #1, 5.0/12) and American Dad (Viewers: #4, 8.85 million; A18-49: #3, 4.1/ 9); and the CW’s veteran 7th Heaven (Viewers: 4.23 million; A18-49: 1.6/ 4). Worth noting for the ageless 7th Heaven was growth out of the 7:30 p.m. edition of Reba of 340,000 viewers and 14 percent among adults 18-49 (with a performance lower than year-ago occupant Charmed).
Dominance, of course, moved into ABC’s court at 9 p.m. with Desperate Housewives at 21.39 million viewers and an 8.5/19 among adults 18-49 – an improvement from lead-in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition of a considerable 6.73 million viewers and 67 percent in the demo. That led into a Sunday 10 p.m. edition of Boston Legal (which used to air here) with 13.78 million viewers (#1) and a 4.6/12 among adults 18-49 (#2) at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was close to regularly scheduled occupant Brothers & Sisters.
CBS pre-empted Cold Case and Without A Trace from 9-11 p.m. for older skewing made-for Candles on Bay Street, which averaged a comfortable 12.77 million viewers (#3) and a 2.9/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#4) from 9-11 p.m. Fox capped off the evening with Family Guy (Viewers: #4, 9.51 million; A18-49: #3, 4.8/11) and waiting-to-be axed The War at Home (Viewers: #4, 6.96 million; A18-49: #3, 3.4/ 8) from 9-10 p.m., while a repeat of America’s Next Top Model on the CW was out of the competitive loop with 2.32 million viewers and a 1.2/ 3 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m.
