TVSA has learned from M-Net that they have bought the
Golden Globe-winning comedy series Ugly Betty and will air it on the channel from September.
Ugly Betty picked up two Globes at this year's awards: Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical; and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical (America Ferrara, who plays Betty Suarez).
Ugly Betty follows the story of Betty Suarez, a young Latino woman from a struggling family who lands a job as assistant to the Editor of MODE fashion magazine.
Betty - despite being picked on for her appearance by co-workers - has full confidence in herself and her ability, even though she has no experience in the vicious fashion industry.
She is sweet, intelligent and hard-working, traits which are ignored by people in an industry in which image is everything.
The series is based on the popular Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea (literally, I am Betty, the Ugly), from Fernando Gaitán, and is adapted into an American setting by producer Salma Hayek, whose production company, Ventarosa, partnered with Touchstone Television on the hour-long programme.
Ugly Betty will premiere sometime in September on M-Net. We'll bring you full details when they emerge.
