BACK IN '96!!!
I know its Friday and you can’t wait to dash out of the office to get some weekend lahv!!! Before you go, allow me to take you on memory lane. I watched MTV Base this morning and I appreciate them for taking me back and remembering how good the 90's were.
MTV BASE played 13 videos on a show called Back in 1996!! So since I got so excited, singing along to all the songs (thanks to my music books and TDK cassettes). I’m assuming most of us were in high school in 1996. Remember Studio Mix with Bob and Melanie - we'd take the video cassettes of old movies and tape over them. We had to compete with our friends on who had the latest song - All 4 one - I swear, Portrait - I can call you, UNV, MN8 - I got a little something for you, 3T--- oooh Gaad... I can go on and on...
So let me share the vid's that MTV dropped.
1. Fugees - Killing Me Softly (The Score)
Now I know you loved this song!! Singing along to "one time”, "two times". I still love the album The Score. I don’t have the actual album but it’s in my iPod. Fugees had it going on, until Lauryn Hill & Wyclef had a thing and thing didn’t go write since then. You see - never mix business with pleasure, it spoils something that could've been great. There have been rumours of them getting back together - but we are still waiting... Frankly let’s not hold our breath.
2. Case Ft Foxy Brown and Mary J. Blige - Touch me Tease (Nutty Professor Soundtrack)
"Touch meee tease me, baby don’t harass me, hold me tight and don’t let go, baby I'ma bout to explooodeeee" if I got the lyrics wrong - forgive me...hi hi hi. I also didn’t know that Case did that song. To me Case started with "faded picture" (and a broken glass - like a mirror revealin...wha' - im getting carried away). I also miss Foxy Brown; last I heard she regained her hearing. Shame it’s sad that as a musician, loosing the most important sense.
3. Keith Sweat - Twisted
What's the first thing you think about when you hear this song??? Beauty Contests!!!!! I was asked to be a judge in a beauty contest in Mpumalanga while visiting. Angazi maybe they thought me being from Jozi made me a celeb... haai... anyway...there were those girls - strutting their stuff!! Oh Gaad, even in 1996 I knew that I never liked it when people wore swimming costumes (yes... we called them that) with pantyhose!!!! Haai... that beauty contest was twisted... I can’t even remember who won!! Keith Sweat came back a couple of times on his own and as part of Levert-Sweat-Gill (LSG) but I guess he didn’t have staying power! Now that Levert passed, do you think they'll come back as SG???
4. Horace Brown - 1 for the money
This song reminds me of this cute guy I used to date. He studied in PTA!!! Ooh my Gaad, I wonder what happened to him - sigh... this song could be heard at every house party. Went to a cousin's house for the December holidays at eKangala!! it was the first I experienced Nite life... ooh Gaad!! heheheh!!! The good old days!! I don’t know what happened to Horace Brown - he just nyamalalad!!
5. Aaliyah - If your girl only knew!! (One in a million)
May she rest in peace. We all made peace that she's gone and never coming back, I think Ciara is trying to follow in her footsteps. One thing we knew (us, Aaliyah fans) was that we knew that Timbaland was the best producer ever. Now everyone is making a noise about Timbo like he just started with JT and Nelly Furtado. But I guess it's because he disappeared after Aaliyah died. I guess he was just grieving and now he's back with a bang. I have all Aaliyah's Albums. Her first Album was the first ORIGINAL CASSET my daddy bought me! Do you guys still have your cassettes, with SIDE 1 and SIDE 2? Someone stole my cassette, but I bought the CD. Age aint nothing but a number is for keeps.
6. Nas ft Lauryn Hill - If I rule the world
Even back in the day, I had my first crush with hip-hop - the love has grown so much that I enjoy Hip-Hop more than any genre of music. Nas is one of those Hip-Hop artists who stood the test of time. He's back with the best album ever - Hip Hop is dead... which still in my Top 5 Best Hip hop album.
7. LL Cool J - Hey Lover (Mr. Smith)
Even back in '96 - LL was a hott Mo'fo' - hmmm I think when I start talking about LL I wont stop, he has like what? - 13 albums, even though critics say he's got more female fans - well yes we love him coz he's hott!!! So sue us...!!! Shawn Stalkman has the highest chicco style in that video. LL on the other hand was rocking those FUBU tops with branding so big you can see them from space. Come to think of it, DJ Fresh is still rocking those FUBU tops!! Someone tell him those died 11 years ago.
8. Mona Lisa - You can’t be wasting my time. (Don’t be a Menace Soundtrack)
Do you remember this one??? it goes "Can you tell me what's going on, in your mind...teeede ti teddi di dimmm... ---- I can take you want to if you stay by my side. and if you're sure what you want, you can’t be wasting my time...” yah something like that. She has a leather delela (we call them dungarees now) in the video and I remember we used to think she looked hot. The problem is - we could never find them leather delelas!!!
9. Mary J. Blige - Not gon' Cry - (Waiting to Exhale)
We all loved the movie - but most of all we all borrowed the CD sleeve to copy all those lyrics into our music book. Years later, I bought the album and I must say - I still love it. and YES... I know each and every lyric! My favourite is Kissing you by Faith Evans. I think it's because it reminds me of my first kiss. Even though I knew nothing about love, the music then had a way of drawing a picture so clear that you could see your fantasy boyfriend. Every time you sang along to a song, it was like you knew exactly what they were singing about. Mary J. is the Queen; we all know she's here to stay....
10. Busta Rhymes - Whoo haa (Got you all in check) - (The Coming)
The days when Busta was crazy - but I loved him! I still do - though I appreciate his growth over the years. His latest album the "BIG BANG" is mellower and he cut off those wild dreads. He's the man now!!
11. R Kelly - Thank Gaaad it's Friday (R Kelly)
Ofcoz we won’t go though the 90's without mentioning Robert!! This song was from his 3rd Album, though I feel they should've have played "YOU REMIND ME (OF MY JEEP)" because that was the ultimate song in 1996. Hands up ladies if you didn’t copy that dance move with a basket ball??? and wearing Delelas, bodysuits and Dr. Martins?? I didn’t think so... we were victims to the fashion.
12. Marc Morrison - Return of the Mac (Return of the Mac)
One thing I don’t understand - why was he returning when we never actually saw him before? Does anyone know? And I guess he returned and disappeared... who know there might be a real return one of these days....! Again... we won’t be holding our breaths!
13. MC Lyte Ft. Xscape - Keep on keepin on (Sunset Park Soundtrack)
Before I say anything?? Where the hell is Xscape?? and does anybody know where I can get their "TRACES OF MY LIPSTICK" album?? I've been searching everywhere. I loved that album. okay back to MC Lyte... as a little M'rapper back in the day, I was singing along to this song... I was surprised at how I still remember it...
A common thread
1. One thing I know is if you still have the above albums today, you can still listen to them.
2. All the videos had fully clothed women - unlike now!!
3. Silk shirts were the in-thing
4. The hairstyles??? Gaad!!!
5. Music was beautiful then!!!
Did this blog bring back memories - share them! And remind us of some music and artists that we forgot about.
You know what you gotta do...
Spread the Lahv...
(DANCE AFRICA FINALS TOMORRROOOWWWW!!!!!)
