Last nite (25/09/2007) I sat through another “Good News” titled Oprah show. Every 3rd week we have to be subjected to Oprah’s uncreative title makers to resort to “Good News”. No, man! What happened to Better News, Best News, Better than Best News… Next time please choose to use the title Miracle Baby, Reuniting with Parents or something creative… “Good News” title messes up my blog! Ha ha ha!
Toby Dawson
The true Oprah-style guest, Toby Dawson, is a Bronze Olympic Medalist who had recently met his biological father. He was born in South Korea, got lost when two in a market on a shopping-spree with his mother and got adopted at three by a family in Alaska. He grew up, uncomfortably, feeling different to everyone. He loved skiing and excelled at it enough to be chosen for the Olympic team. When he won the Bronze Medal at the Olympics, people came out of the woodwork from South Korea claiming to be family.
Why do people do that? It doesn’t make sense to claim relation to someone you don’t even know. Thank Gaad for DNA testing. All those that claimed relation were tested and a match was found. He was Toby’s father, Kim Jae-su. Toby took his girlfriend/fiancée, Leah, to go meet the parents and siblings back home in South Korea. It was a very emotional reunion. The father swears he had not stopped looking for his child.
Toby and father reunite after 25 years.Toby only met the father and brother, who looks like a chubbier version of Toby. Toby cannot speak Korean, the family cannot speak English so they need an interpreter. In true Oprah-style she had the father in studio to surprise Toby and meet Toby’s adoptive parents, Mike and Deborah. Toby’s biological parents have since split and he has yet to meet his biological mother as she has re-married it is another hurdle. Huh? I would move heaven and earth to see a child that I lost in a market 25 years ago! Or
did she "lose" him?
Mike,Kim Jae-su, Deborah, Toby and LeahLike I read somewhere – Hear and forget, See and remember, Do and understand. Unless I am in her situation I will never know why the reluctance or the hurdles to meet are there. I do not wish anyone to go through that anguish either. But I ain’t losing my child any time soon!!
