Music, the food of life

I am, most probably, one of the last 70 people that still listen to Eddie Zondi (no offence Eddie, but uninformed peeps think you have a very limited listenership). My King K gets really upset when I wanna listen to Eddie. He can’t stand a lot of things about Eddie. I just love Eddie’s choice of music. He knows how to choose them songs… My choice of music depends on a lot of things; my mood, my ego, my choice of pissing people off for that day and mostly – I want to sing along! So, if I can sing along to a song or dance to it – I will play it.

King K and I recently went through our collection of CD’s. Yes, it is a collection when you have over 400 CD’s. We were feeling quite unhappy with each other’s choice of music that day and we decided to listen to any CD we owned that we haven’t listened to in a while… Damn! It takes time! I know you are all wondering why? Are we really that bored? But no, we love music and when you have that much music you barely listen to even 10% of the stuff you have. Be honest, YOU do have a couple of CD’s that you own and have not listened to in over a year or more!!! Admit it!

We did this to find a way to resolve our music issues. My King K listens to all sorts of music, any music – as long as it is not House music; or sometimes Malaika. He doesn’t “like” it, he doesn’t “get” it, “it sounds monotonous” are the reason’s he uses to avoid me playing House music in his presence. He swears that he attends enough “Malaika Concerts” during spring and summer so he doesn’t need to listen to it at home as well. By the way, “Malaika Concerts” are weddings! Every wedding we attend seems to have the knack of turning into a Malaika Concert as the DJ seems to think playing the groups entire album is getting people groovy. I, on the other hand, listen to Alles – I am not lying. Anything! Play it! I will love it…

The tedious task did not last long because we clearly could not agree on what to listen to but this was an OH moment for me… Why do we have so much music when we barely listen to less than half the stuff? Why do we still buy more music if we aren’t already listening to most of the stuff we have? Why do I listen to some music at certain periods in my life? Why do we even own some of those CD’s?

I buy music on a whim; I am a collector of DJ Fresh, Luther Vandross, Malaika, Toni Braxton, TKZ, Geroge Benson, Kabelo, R Kelly and a whole lot of other artist albums. When I bought the albums I did not even know what was on the album. When I love the artist and believed they would not disappoint, I just buy it. Most cases, I wouldn’t be disappointed either. If the album is not that good; I would find songs that I could at least listen to and not feel like it was a waste of money. Most times, you do get those artists that release a debut great hits album; when the next one hits the shelf – Segololos runs out to get it. And it ain’t so good, it doesn’t even have one song that stands out. Now, you have it on your collection and when you look at it, you just can’t play it…

King K, a largely Mid African music fan, and (ha ha ha ha) owns all of Case’s albums – yep, the “I’m missing you”, dude! And in the entire album we could only listen to that one song. King K tried to play some song called “Crooked letter” – oh my gaad! Eish! I can’t even describe the laughter I had from him trying to sing the song. LOL just doesn’t seem to cut it! He knows the words of the song and can sing it well, but it is a ridiculous song. Do you own any CD’s that you had to adjust your taste of sound to some song; just because you own it!? He seems to think my love for Madonna’s “Survival” from the Bedtime stories album is such an “adjustment” but I genuinely love the song… Please holler at me if you also appreciate the song! I can already hear the song play and the first verse goes…
“I'll never be an angel
I'll never be a saint it's true
I'm too busy surviving
Whether it's heaven or hell
I'm gonna be living to tell, so”

Oh gaad! Pure bliss! We eventually agreed that he likes music that is dominated by Piano and violins, and I love the guitar!

When I am feeling a bit low, down and out, need a lift, I listen to “Fragile heart” by Yolanda Adams. When I am feeling in love with the world, I listen to “Dandelion” by Tevin Campbell. When I am feeling aging and depressed, I listen to “Sentimental” by Alexander O’neal. When I wanna feel like being 12 again, I listen to Whitney Houston or Natalie Cole. When I study, I listen “A new world order” by Curtis Mayfield. When I am feeling pissed off, I listen to “Too proud to beg” by Luther Vandross. When I wanna piss people off, I listen to Malaika. When I am stuck in traffic just hearing the first chords of Toni Braxton’s “The Heat” gets my mood so high – I could jump out the car and start dancing! Actually the entire album just rocks my world… Black Coffee’s album…Fally Ipupa’s album… El DeBarge’s album… Tshala Muana’s albums… Paula Abdul’s album… Modogo’s album… Norah Jone’s albums… My 22 month old son trying to sing “Cinderella/Umbrella” or that “Suicidal/Beautiful girl” song… and Oh! Oh! Oh! That U2 “It’s a beautiful day” song… I did say I listen to everything… Such such food for life!!

I'm loving yo article right now Sego because I see a lot of myselfd in King K  but at the same time I try to give cd's a chance but ussually I discard it after one listen..if it doent do it for me.

I once bought a CD by this new Neo-soul artist Leela James who came to south africa  and this was becoz of one song I heared  but when I tried to listen to the Cd it just seemed too heavy and angry   so I gave it to a friend of mines who actually appreciated it
..coupla motnhs later I was in this nice-hangout where people bring their own cd sometimes as long as its not house...and they palyed the same cd..Thats when I heared it differently and couldnt wait to tell them oh that's so and so  and I actually started loving it.. but now I cant get it back...eish

i'm still thinkin of my mood songs be right bakc!!!

Feeling down and out -- Kirk franklin"s always  or Imagine Me(you must listen to the words) and also Bebe Winans-if anything ever happened to you/in harms way
Felling sad old and nostalgic - that "sentimental song" you mentioned always does it  and so does a bit of James ingram, a bit of Johnny Gill
Feeling angry and frustrated....I've just discovered Amy Winehouse and she does offer some distraction actually I lke a bit of roughness and and a bit of mellow when I'm feelin like this  maybe even rock like Robbie Williams or Brandy's Full moon

When I wanna piss someone off ...defiantely Malaika works all the time in my neibhhood  or Mzekezeke..or Celine Dion but then I get pissed off myself

My slosshed friday/saterday chillexation music  when I'm at that point where I'm thinkin of loved ones or feeling tooo happy or too sad  -booze can heighten your emotions, I always have the folliowing
Anita baker...You bring me joy, Sometimes you win sometimes you loose, no
more tears
George Michael- Icant make you love me, one more try
Will downing....various tracks, Luther Vandross-I have no tears, going in circles, all the woman i need

When I'm feeling like I'm cool, I'm with it, I'm collected, I got-it-all-figured-out and better than the rest...LOL..thats when i play an eclectic mix  and I go alternative
Maxwell, Corrianne BailyRae, Angeliqe kijoe, incognito, BrandNewHeavies, AmyWinehouse, vivian Green, andrea voleenweider, michakel franks, and even some busi mhlongo...I play this type when I'm with certain peeps and I know they dont mind discussing music   ...baically "at this stage ukuzitshela"

sorry for the long reply

Bathong, someone pla explain why do we still have that hidious & hilarious pic of Linda S'biya, I', sure that it was banned or supposed to be banned, one of the two???

Nice article Segololo, u know I live for music & that's why I never see myself leaving the entertainment industry.  What I have realised about my choice of music is that I listen to a variety of genre's, but i try to stay as far away as possible from house music, unless, it's in a party enviroment, kodwa ke ngeke ungithole ngihleli ngilalele yona.  At the moment I am going though some trials & tribulations so I am listening to American Gospel (My apologies sis Spur Ribs, u are really not doing it for me!!!)

Sego its Amy Winehouse not May hi hi hi  and she's the drugged one always on the news these days for the wrong reasons, her music sound like the old aretha franklin  or betty wright in the sisxties and SHE"s WHITE thats what makes her interesting

I busy tryin to find a Lee Oskar mp3 on the net (I know its worn but just one song beofre I but him)

also checkout  the Jazzmasters-remebmer that guy Paul Hardcastle with that song "you maybe gone but you'll neva be forgoten"  he's the producer of that group...very laid back type of sound to play while you cookin or washin or staring into space

I listen to Mr. Zondi, id prefer him not to speak though.…. Over 400 CDs, damn that’s a collection …. I happen to possess a hard drive that has a collection of mp3s of various genres, stuff always gets added to it. What I normally do is burn me an MP3 disc on whatever I wanted to listen to at the time, play in the car/house, people often ask for them & I never bother to ask for them back…. Music that changes my mood, Im still stuck on the 90’s era R&B………… R Kelly 12 Play, Silk, Sam Salter (he pissed me off cause he never released another album), Aaron Hall, Puff Johnson (she also pissed me off cause she never released another album), H Town, Johnny gill, brian mcknight, etc….

I would pay good money to whoever can get me the aaliyah & r kelly remixes, tried amazon and couldn’t get, I probably need to befriend a DJ cos these radio stations sometyms play them, the remixes zaka At your best you are love, your bodys callin, summerbunnies ……….

Im also into hip hop/rap, im a hardcore Biggie Fan, his ready to die album, gives me goose bumps…….& many other artists junior mafia, Jay Z, KRS one, Heavy D…

Latest stuff I dig, John Legend (both albums), your Amy Winehouse, Corinne baley, Teddy Pendegrass’s Joy album yeses lately it changes my mood.

Local artists, Thebe mokone, the rocka, stands out…..

Guys, have u ever noticed that the songs that are really good are never the popular ones.  Can u beleive that when Kelly Khumalo did her proposal stunt with her then boyfriend on All You Need Is Love.  On stage she performned a wonderful Zulu/Slow Jam song titled - Akhekho Omunye & I just fell in love with it.  Then the next day I decided to buy it (since SA music is CHEAP u don't have time to think twice about purchasing it).  Still today I can't beleive that mina I actually have a Kelly Khumalo CD in my CD collection........

OH Moment of the decade

I will not remove these pics -That (Linda sibiya oh moment) was; and still is, an oh moment for a decade for me... Who you allow to take pics of you is always crucial as you never know where the pic will end up. What you wear to the beach must always be attractive to you. As a celeb what you do is of public interest so put you golf balls tucked away.

Oh Moments blog deals with anything and anywhere moments where I need to re-evaluate my life, standards, dreams, choices, emotions and anything that I feel like it! It is my Carte blanche!
