I am, most probably, one of the last 70 people that still listen to Eddie Zondi (no offence Eddie, but uninformed peeps think you have a very limited listenership). My King K gets really upset when I wanna listen to Eddie. He can’t stand a lot of things about Eddie. I just love Eddie’s choice of music. He knows how to choose them songs… My choice of music depends on a lot of things; my mood, my ego, my choice of pissing people off for that day and mostly – I want to sing along! So, if I can sing along to a song or dance to it – I will play it.
King K and I recently went through our collection of CD’s. Yes, it is a collection when you have over 400 CD’s. We were feeling quite unhappy with each other’s choice of music that day and we decided to listen to any CD we owned that we haven’t listened to in a while… Damn! It takes time! I know you are all wondering why? Are we really that bored? But no, we love music and when you have that much music you barely listen to even 10% of the stuff you have. Be honest, YOU do have a couple of CD’s that you own and have not listened to in over a year or more!!! Admit it!
We did this to find a way to resolve our music issues. My King K listens to all sorts of music, any music – as long as it is not House music; or sometimes Malaika. He doesn’t “like” it, he doesn’t “get” it, “it sounds monotonous” are the reason’s he uses to avoid me playing House music in his presence. He swears that he attends enough “Malaika Concerts” during spring and summer so he doesn’t need to listen to it at home as well. By the way, “Malaika Concerts” are weddings! Every wedding we attend seems to have the knack of turning into a Malaika Concert as the DJ seems to think playing the groups entire album is getting people groovy. I, on the other hand, listen to Alles – I am not lying. Anything! Play it! I will love it…
The tedious task did not last long because we clearly could not agree on what to listen to but this was an OH moment for me… Why do we have so much music when we barely listen to less than half the stuff? Why do we still buy more music if we aren’t already listening to most of the stuff we have? Why do I listen to some music at certain periods in my life? Why do we even own some of those CD’s?
I buy music on a whim; I am a collector of DJ Fresh, Luther Vandross, Malaika, Toni Braxton, TKZ, Geroge Benson, Kabelo, R Kelly and a whole lot of other artist albums. When I bought the albums I did not even know what was on the album. When I love the artist and believed they would not disappoint, I just buy it. Most cases, I wouldn’t be disappointed either. If the album is not that good; I would find songs that I could at least listen to and not feel like it was a waste of money. Most times, you do get those artists that release a debut great hits album; when the next one hits the shelf – Segololos runs out to get it. And it ain’t so good, it doesn’t even have one song that stands out. Now, you have it on your collection and when you look at it, you just can’t play it…
King K, a largely Mid African music fan, and (ha ha ha ha) owns all of Case’s albums – yep, the “I’m missing you”, dude! And in the entire album we could only listen to that one song. King K tried to play some song called “Crooked letter” – oh my gaad! Eish! I can’t even describe the laughter I had from him trying to sing the song. LOL just doesn’t seem to cut it! He knows the words of the song and can sing it well, but it is a ridiculous song. Do you own any CD’s that you had to adjust your taste of sound to some song; just because you own it!? He seems to think my love for Madonna’s “Survival” from the Bedtime stories album is such an “adjustment” but I genuinely love the song… Please holler at me if you also appreciate the song! I can already hear the song play and the first verse goes…
“I'll never be an angel
I'll never be a saint it's true
I'm too busy surviving
Whether it's heaven or hell
I'm gonna be living to tell, so”
Oh gaad! Pure bliss! We eventually agreed that he likes music that is dominated by Piano and violins, and I love the guitar!
When I am feeling a bit low, down and out, need a lift, I listen to “Fragile heart” by Yolanda Adams. When I am feeling in love with the world, I listen to “Dandelion” by Tevin Campbell. When I am feeling aging and depressed, I listen to “Sentimental” by Alexander O’neal. When I wanna feel like being 12 again, I listen to Whitney Houston or Natalie Cole. When I study, I listen “A new world order” by Curtis Mayfield. When I am feeling pissed off, I listen to “Too proud to beg” by Luther Vandross. When I wanna piss people off, I listen to Malaika. When I am stuck in traffic just hearing the first chords of Toni Braxton’s “The Heat” gets my mood so high – I could jump out the car and start dancing! Actually the entire album just rocks my world… Black Coffee’s album…Fally Ipupa’s album… El DeBarge’s album… Tshala Muana’s albums… Paula Abdul’s album… Modogo’s album… Norah Jone’s albums… My 22 month old son trying to sing “Cinderella/Umbrella” or that “Suicidal/Beautiful girl” song… and Oh! Oh! Oh! That U2 “It’s a beautiful day” song… I did say I listen to everything… Such such food for life!!
