Words And Language

As I listened to Jenny Crwys-Williams (radio 702) on Monday (26/11/2007); I really wondered how much crucifixion of a language has happened in South Africa with all the other unregistered, or rather unofficial, languages.

Jenny started the show by explaining the “nice” Joburg weather we had and went on to say “I am wearing a jersey! Uurgh! I hate that word!” She then opened the phone lines for people to mention words that irritate them as she just hates the word "Jersey".

I had a long list… I tend to consider myself a “good English speaking person”. Yeah right! I even use the words that irritate me, but I get irritated when others use them. Go figure!

The top words that just irritate me and “tug at my nipple” (Thanks, Untouchable Lerato)

Kids – Why the hell do we refer to our children as “Kids”. I used to have this Rastafarian frind, Gaby, he hated the words so much whenever someone said it, and he would simply say “People have Children. Goats have Kids”

Probe – Everything in the newspapers is “probed”. What happened to “investigation”?

Knocked up – Where and how did this term form part of correct speak?

Skat – Just like WhiteSockGirl – Say my name! Say my name! Wat is a skat?

Anyways, we have 11 official languages – some people speak all 11, yes! There’s a dude at work that speaks 13 languages – He speaks the 11 South African Official languages, Fanakalo and Tsotsitaal. Tsotsitaal is a language whether we want to acknowledge it or not! Our Oupas still speak the language and pride themselves that we can’t hear what they say.

I know there’s a huge debate around Fanakalo as a language but mineworkers use it. It may not be a very respectful way of communication. It has a lot of deregotary terms that were deduced from the same 11 or more languages we use in South Africa. So what’s the fuss? I am an inquisitive person that would love to know the history of this language…

So, what are the words that make you see blue, red and green when you hear them?
What words do people use so much you are ready to offer an alternative word?

Now this is a topic really close to my heart! U wouldn't believe how many books I have on words and language :) .......... Totally with you on goats and kids. It's an example I use often in the newsroom .......... OK, probe: in journalism, short words for headlines are imperative, and investigation just swallows up too much space. It's a very accepted term in the corruption lexicon. .......... Knocked up: a NO NO. ::::::::: Words that make me see RED: learners ... aaaaaagh! IT'S pupils or students. .......... Any NGO speak, or gobbledygook, like stakeholders, and paradigms, and development tools, and legitimate players get me out of here :) .......... And a term I hate with a passion is 'at this moment in time'. BAN it!! If it's happening now, it's happening now. Totally extraneous. .......... Skat, it's an Afrikaans form for endearment like 'sweetie'.

Any NGO speak, or gobbledygook, like stakeholders, and paradigms, and development tools, and legitimate players get me out of here :)

As one of the stakeholders in the NGO community, at this moment in time,....
hiehiehie.....  A new one...  'unpack' the report....... what does it mean??

Accronyms!   Hate them.   I cannot read the NGO reports because of the accronyms so no way I am going to 'unpack' it.   I am going to tear it up... so much easier

Meme J
03 Dec 2007 14:26

Hey WSG, skattie [ :)(: ] !!!! Couldn't resist a riposte to your moment in time. But please note I haven't used skat!! Unpack the report??? Maybe unravel the gobbledy gook? Ha, ha! Possibly break it down for action? Possibly get rid of it like a hot potato? ... Now if they were talking about unpacking the boxer briefs, we'd all know what they meant!! ::::::: It's kind of OK, I guess, if NGOs use NGO speak, if they're speaking NGO to NGO 2 GO. .......... BUT what I HATE, is when a journalist doesn't 'unpack' the language in their report; you ask them 'what does this paragraph mean? I don't get it'. And they reply, 'I don't know, it's what it says in the statement'!!! Boy, do I get ready to unpack ...... :) :)

WhiteSockGirl
03 Dec 2007 14:37

Oh Gaaaddddd skat..  let me 'unpack' the reason behind the NGO talk for you.  They have no f****n idea what it all means.  It is all 'window dressing' talk... another one that gets my tits all pointy.

Like the less u understand, the less u have to do?!!!!! Not u personally :) .......... Read this and weep :::: 'it came at a time when everyone needed to work towards comprehensive prevention and protection of mechanisms at community levels'. :::: From a reporter, yes! And, no, no, no, it did not make it into the newspaper!

WhiteSockGirl
03 Dec 2007 15:06

Too much for my three brain cells... what does it mean?  But  if it that comes from a reporter,...  I have hope for my 'stakeholders'.

Like the less u understand, the less u have to do?!!!!! Not u personally :) ..........
may be ....  but may be not!  Hiehiehie... will have to ask my colleagues if it applies to me.

I will have to endure that gobbledy gook for the next 4 days!  Only alcohol will get me through the next 4 days!

nice Sego! words i hate, coz they're just overused/abused...

'stunning' - (aaaaaaaaargh) people will use this in response to hearing that their car service actually cost R2000 less than they anticipated - then turn around and use it to describe how you looked at your fabulously best.... WHY??????

the next one is more a phrase, not a word- and butchered with no shame 'make a follow-up' - no , you don't MAKE a follow up.... just blerry well FOLLOW UP!!!

telephonic conversation - there's actually no such word as 'telephonic'

FANAKALO - a terrible bastardisation of languages - i hate it coz it's a language of commands and instructions (all disrespectful) from white bosses to black labour. that's the sole purpose of the language, and why it's not given any respect or regard in our beloved democratic society....

on another note, can that horrendous pic of linda sibiya to my right be removed, pleeeeeeeease?????  those pink speedo's give me nightmares - and the man-boobs... crikey!!!

The phrase that pisses me off is  cousin sister or cousin brother,  what the heck is that a cousin is just a cousin, then one just says she/ he.
fanakalo- my grandfather once told me that fanakalo was a language used in mines by workers for easy understanding bcoz the workers were a group of (xhosa, zulu, sotho, tswana, sazwi, venda, tsonga, ndebele, pedi), so they created one language that had a word/ two from each of those languages, because it is not easy for i.e a xhosa to understand pedi fast.

And i hate it when someone uses a double negative, eg: I didn't do nothing, When they should say "  I did nothing" or "I didn't do anything"...geez man!

we nee to transform the instutions and do away with the injustices/imbalances of the past  in advocating transparency  because at this point in time our constituency demands that we revolutionirise our ideologies to mobilise our mandate and in as much as the infrustructure is condusive to transformation, at the end of the day we need to empower the grass rootslevel of the emerging communities by thinking outside the box and pushing the envelope, by involving all stakeholders.

Eish guys, i just remember somthing. We were watching E- news one day, and the reporter said something along the lines of: "Atleast 100 people died in the fire, with 70 seriously wounded".
My aunt then asked me, "Why is it that on the news they say "atleast", when its actually a lot of people who died?"
Guys, I actually had a hard time convincing her of  the "english" meaning of the word(not less than), not the "darkie" meaning.
Coz to her, atleast means, "no so many" type of thing, i dont know if any of you understand this.
So is this also Bantu education at fault?

methinks somebody is exagerating
BTW..the word "robot" is not "wrong or out-of order actually its a uniquely South African way of describing traffic lights and its actually appropriate because a robot is a machine or a computer program which usually has a life of its own in this case replacing the traffic-cop in controling/directing traffic.

05 Dec 2007 05:43

heheh nice one SEgo but like spopo said things got out of hand!

we nee to transform the instutions and do away with the injustices/imbalances of the past in advocating transparency because at this point in time our constituency demands that we revolutionirise our ideologies to mobilise our mandate and in as much as the infrustructure is condusive to transformation, at the end of the day we need to empower the grass rootslevel of the emerging communities by thinking outside the box and pushing the envelope, by involving all stakeholders.

spopo pls translate...i'm really curious! i always find it strange when people use such language (which is acceptable only if you're in school and i mean if u r physically in a class at that time...or business conferences and such) in a normal day to day talk. why do they do it mara ye? nna instead of being impressed that ooh the english is soo good i get ticked off!

i had to laugh when i read this...Fikile Mabula and his jargon

re you mockering me?'
19/12/2007 21:43 - (SA) Johannesburg -

ANC Youth League leader Fikile Mbalula is seldom at a loss for words, and on Wednesday he strung them together with cheerful disregard for the conventions of the English language.
Speaking to journalists at the ANC's policy conference in Polokwane, he labelled himself "spokesperson and chief campaigner lobbyist of the youth league".
As he got going with "all the lies and the rabble arousing (sic) has come to a point of reality", some head scratching was understandable.
"You are mockering around a political position," he said later.
The gobbledegook did not stop there.
"Corruption must be dealt with including in terms of its manifestation," Mbalula said.

Having previously referred to Finance Minister Trevor Manuel as a "drama queen", he took the opportunity to take a dig a Deputy Defence Minister Mluleki George.
George told a group of Mbeki supporters on Monday "at the moment, comrades, we are on top of them (ANC president Jacob Zuma's camp)".
Mbalula compared George to "comical Ali" - former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's spin doctor Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf.
Al-Sahif was the man who insisted Iraq was winning the second Gulf War while the Americans were advancing on Baghdad and the city was crumbling around him.

In keeping with war metaphors, Mbalula compared the road to Zuma's triumph at the conference to the bloody street battles fought between the Germans and the Russians in Leningrad at the close of World War II, in the winter of 1945.
"We will deal with them street by street," he said, quoting a Russian general.
The first victory, said Mbalula, had been the triumph of manual over electronic vote counting. "We did not want a computer thing."
Next came the bombardment of ANC chairperson Mosiuoa Lekota with points of order. This was followed by the rejection of gender parity for the ANC's top six positions.

"It was a campaigning strategy, not an issue of principle," he said.
Finally, added Mbalula with unwavering glee, came Zuma's election as ANC president.

There are so many "lingos" today because of the use of Jargon and scientific terminology. People who work in a bank and people who work at a mortuary would not use the same kind of language, for instance.

I'll speak for myself: Probe and Investigation mean ONE thing, you should really not be confused about this. sometimes i'll have to write a headline to a news story that i just edited and lets just say the word "Invesigate" has to be included in the headline: Investigate is a long word compared to probe. Being a subeditor also, one has to find "suitable" words and manupulate them to "fit" in the provided space.

I'm also very passionate about language, especially my home language: Setswana and English. but english fascinates me more. so it is a pain in the you know what sometimes when i read wrong spelling or wrong punctuation or bad language in general, however, i have to admit that some errors when writting or speaking are inevitable and not everyone has had the training that i've had, so matsogo metsing sometimes....

OH Moment of the decade

I will not remove these pics -That (Linda sibiya oh moment) was; and still is, an oh moment for a decade for me... Who you allow to take pics of you is always crucial as you never know where the pic will end up. What you wear to the beach must always be attractive to you. As a celeb what you do is of public interest so put you golf balls tucked away.

Oh Moments blog deals with anything and anywhere moments where I need to re-evaluate my life, standards, dreams, choices, emotions and anything that I feel like it! It is my Carte blanche!
