"A family...It's the best and the worst thing that can ever happen to us...the truth is that without each other we would be truly lost." - Sarah Walker
Call it Irony or Fate, but all TV Walkers are crazy people, and I just love Crazy People!
The Walker family however in the last 23 episode managed to worm thier way into my heart, and despite thier dysfunctionality highlight the fact that family is everything a message the show thrives on. Previous TV Walker "relations" such as infamous Karen Walker from
Will & Grace and Nicole Walker from
Days of Our Lives (which both unfortunately share no relation to these Walkers) have highlighted!
QUOTE:
Robert: I'm sorry about my family.
Nora: You never have to apologize for your family. Besides, it's refreshing to be the tame ones for once.
Last Thursday, Brothers & Sisters' first season came to a close in a full circle'd Season Finale.
A quick recap if you missed it; Justin counts his final moments left with his family before his off deployed to Iraq, and tries spending time with each of them in thier own way. Kitty decides to throw Nora an Engagement Party, despite Kitty objecting to it.
Kitty tells Nora that she's moving out to move in with Senator McCallister. At the engagement, we meet McCallister's even-more-dysfunctional-and-crazier than the Walkers (or as Saul put it, the McCrazies). Meanwhile Kevin and Jason McCallister (Guest Starring
Days of our Lives' Eric Winter) reunite, however bombshell's are dropped when Jason reveals himself to be a Minister and Saul's sexuality is questioned when an old friend pops up!
Despite M-Net advertising the show as a "dramatic" Season Finale, I found this finale to be light, except for the part with Justin heading off to the war.
I must admit, when Brothers & Sisters first premiered I avoided the show; due to the fact that it had just replaced Desperate Housewives on Thursdays and the first 10 minutes didn't catch me. I started watching from Episode 11 and quickly through M-Net Series caught up with Episode 01 - 10 and what a beautiful brilliant story. I even at times thought this show was better than Desperate Housewives, then I realised you can't compare Apples with Oranges, or in the Walker's case, nut(cases)!
The Walker clan tough us that families aren't perfect, they aren't normal, but they're important and always there, and the show manages to touch hearts, despite how crazy it might get, there's always something you're able to relate to.
QUOTE:
Kitty (to Nora): Thanks for letting me stay. It's been an awful year, but it's been the best awful year of my life.
The finale just highlighted the importance of family especially with each sibling and what's going on in thier lives.
Justin as mentioned is going off to war, and with the proper realisation that he might not return tries to spend time with each of his siblings and family members doing something with them.
Kitty takes her next big step in life with moving out to live with Robert McCallister, however feels really guilty about leaving Nora after an "great horrible year" together.
Sarah's family storyline was neglected this finale, and I really hoped there would be some closure with it. However her wounds with Joe's betrayal with kissing half sister Rebecca still runs deep, however she makes a real effort, which was quite nice, to be nice or civillised towards Holly who apparently, "they have more in common than thier willing to agree on".
Thomas deals with recently loosing a child, however this storyline was hardly touched on in the finale, however he realises that in times of despair with what his been through, Family really is everything you need.
And finally
Kevin inadvertently shows his support for his sisters engagement with Sen. McCallister (with whom his always opposed) by helping with organising thier engagement party with McCallister's brotther Jason McCallister who Guest Starred a few episodes back. Fans will remember him from the role of Rex Brady-DiMera from
Days of our Lives. Kevin hooks up with Jason, until he learns Jason actually is a Minister. How's that for a blow?!
Black sheep of the family and dark angel
Rebecca seems to be still living with Nora, but getting on with her family and kind of fitting in. Overal she also seems to be on good terms with her mother, Holly again. Meanwhile Rebecca finally admits to Justin about her past which may help with the whole Joe thing!
QUOTE:
Nora: All the people I love come here on their way to and from the big moments of their lives.
In case you didn't manage to pick up but this season went in full circle. The first episode of the season is entitled "Patriarchy" which lays out the centrality of William's role in the lives of all the Walkers. The Season Finale is titled "Matriarchy", which signals Nora having come into her own as the center of the Walker/Harper clan. Also the first episode ended with WIlliam falling in the pool and drowning and the finale ends with the Walker family (plus Sen. McCallister, Holly and Saul)
And Roll on Season Two We Hope...
The finale failed to address some pressing issues as well as some Season 2 Wish List...
1. Joe / Sarah / Rebecca - With Justin knowing the truth (and taking it to Iraq) with him, I hope he and Rebeca both speak to Sarah about the Joe incident and let Sarah know it wasn't exactly entirely Joe's fault.
2. Holly- After that brilliant cake fight scene two weeks ago, I see Nora and Sarah both seem to have forgiven Holly, and judging from her thinking she's a Walker clan member by jumping in the pool with them I certainly Holly aint ready to move in. The chemistry between Holly and the Walker's is great when it's intense and there's friction! Gelling them together like a happy family can't happen in Season 2, as much as I like when thier fairly nice towards her, I hope there's some Walker/Harper friction in the second season- because it's just great!
3
. Nora and the House- Nora can't be living alone with Rebecca in that huge house, maybe Sarah should give Joe the house and move in with her mom for a bit. Would be interesting to see Rebecca and Sarah under one roof?! Anyways I'm guessing Justin will return in the Season 2 Premiere, but he doesn't live at home, maybe have him move back in?
4. McCallister a Regular please- While Rob Lowe was credited this entire season as a Guest Star, I certainly hope his made a Regular in Season 2. Kitty and McCallister's relationship is charming, I just hope they don't jump to a wedding to quickly next season!
5. Saul's sexuality was questioned this episode with his old friend coming out (of the closet) and hitting on Saul... although done very vague, could another Walker (although Saul isn't technically speaking a Walker) be gay? Well he did date Holly!!
