So You Want To Be A Gospel Star?

Do you have it in you to be the next Sis Ribs? Are you a gospel star in the making but the world just doesn't know it yet?

If this is you, your time has come.

SABC2 is hooking up with music industry exec Lindelani Mkhize to create a reality show searching for the next big South African gospel star. The show, appropriately enough, is called I Want to Sing Gospel.

I Want to Sing Gospel will hold auditions in five regions and will be whisking 30 of the best singers away for 13 grueling, trying weeks in Johannesburg, where they'll have to prove to Mkhize why he should turn one of them into a superstar.

The prodigious producer and creator of the SAMA-winning gospel group Joyous Celebration, Mkhize has the Midas touch when it comes to record sales.

He has set forth a series of challenges for those hopefuls who'll be joining him and a panel of his most trusted confidantes to sort out the divas from the duds.

At the end of the 13 weeks, SABC2 viewers will help Mkhize choose the one singer whose disk they would like to see on their CD racks. Right next to their copy of Ukholo Lwam'.

The Auditions

Auditions will be held at the following venues:

Feathermarket Centre in Port Elizabeth on 22 May
BAT Centre in Durban on 28 May
Bassline in Johannesburg on 17 June
Sand du Plessis Theatre (PACOFS) in Bloemfontein on 25 June
Cape Town City Hall on 1 July

To enter, you are required to send an SMS with the city you want to audition in, your full names and ID number to 34709 (the SMS is charged at R2 and free minutes do not apply).

You will then receive an SMS with the code you'll need to show at the door and a number to call for further information and the competition rules.

The auditions start at 09h30 at each venue.

You want to sing gospel? So sing gospel. Go on - make TVSA proud.

Bathong, do you honestly think you can be the next "sis Rebs"!! Haikona, that lady is in a league of her own and whatever we all try to do, never matches! Have you seen how she is wired on the minute she gets thi mic? Good luck to whoever wants to be humiliated into thinking they can match her!! She is an institution, not a musician!!

Reckon the show could discover some promising talent tucked away in choirs etc.  It'll also be very interesting seeing a contest from the different angle of gospel - how it's different / the same from pop competitions and whether or not the meaning of the songs gets more punch because of it. It's a always a prob. in Idols etc that people don't connect with meaning - will be interesting to see if this goes a different way.

I am looking forward to ama auditions. Kudala ndizibhanxa, I've done Popstars twice and the Lion King (Moya Wam was the worst audition I've been to). But andiphali mandla ngazilingo. I will try again and I believe that this is my time to shine.

I've been practising none stop. Andikuthandi ukumiswa xa ndicula, this time I will make sure I close ma eyes and sing until ndive mna ukuba ndanele.

Can all those people who embarass themselves on IDOLS (by singing Gospel) go audition for this???
I'm defs gonna be at Bassline for this one coz it's definitely bound to provide a dozen or more laughs.

Way to go Sobza!!! See you at Bassline!!

<<<At the end of the 13 weeks, SABC2 viewers will help Mkhize choose the one singer whose disk they would like to see on their CD racks. Right next to their copy of Ukholo Lwam'.>>> Whose CD is Ukholo Lwam?

<<Do you have it in you to be the next Sis Ribs?>>> Is this SABC 2's line or TVSA"s? If it's SABC 2 saying this then I"d like them to please reconsider coz our gospel industry is already "infested" with a lot of Rebecca wanna be's and it would be disastrous to use Rebecca's name to attract people to the show coz all those people are gonna go there and imitate her and I don't think we can handle any more of her kind. (of singers)

There was a similar show not too long ago and Collin Damans won, whatever happened from then? Sheila Bhengu and Thabo Mdhluli were presenting the show and I think Lindelani was on the panel too, if I'm not mistaken

Welcome back Xhosa Chick Im tired of Ribs-wannabes, (is her show still on, bathong?) Ja! the show is still on - yesterday there was another wanna be singing with a church choir. I got irritated at how that lady didn't have her own style. I think even Sis Ribs was mentally telling her that too.

So i went to the auditions and got through to the 1st round and neva made it further after the 2nd round. I must honestly say that going to the audition itself is a beautiful experience bcoz u neva know what to expect. I won't give up, I have been 2 the Joyous Celebration auditions as well but also neva made it. It comes down to the right time and right moment as well as if it's meant to be or not. I love singing with all of my existence & if God has a plan 4 me on this earth, i wud be happy if he helps me achieve this dream of mine. I will wait.....as the saying goes, Patience is a Virtue.
