The judging process has been modified slightly. Instead of choosing one design from each category, we can now vote for the 5 top designs from both categories i.e amateur and professional categories. There are 20 designs from each category to choose from. CLICK HERE to view the designs.
My thoughts on a few I’ve seen:
The ‘I look cheap’ award: amateur category
I am not feeling the competition details on the logo at all! This design looks like one of those ‘knock-off/fong kongs’ you see on street corners and I wouldn’t expect to pay more than R100.00 for this pair. The orange colour on the design seems like an afterthought.
The cute but not inclusive award: professional category
It’s very aesthetically appealing but it seems to be targeting a certain market- under 15s or the female population. You can tell that the designer put so much into this and it has this calming effect on me. What is has in beauty it lacks in cross-over appeal which is what converse’s always been about.
I love this design but if I’m living in any other city but Joburg, I wouldn’t want to rock this pair. It says streetwise, urban, hip and captures the vibrancy of the city but all this could be lost on someone who’s never been to Joburg. I would buy it though.
The taken too far award: professional category
That detail about the competition on the logo doesn’t have to be there. Nna, I prefer to play pacman on my computer or a gaming arcade. Nuff said!
I am patriotic and I know the national anthem! That’s the message I’m getting here. I guess the designer wanted a truly South African design and we all know the national flag colours look good on the flag and nowhere else. I can’t dress this up and that’s a major All-Star appeal for me. It is attention grabbing though!
I hope you win award: professional category
Minus the competition details, I luurrrve this! The X-ray detail is brilliant!!!!!!!!
Clean lines, looks well worn in by default and there isn’t too much detail on it, just like a shoe should be. This would convert me to a Chuck Taylor fan.
Simplicity combined with the traditional all star feel. Maybe the text can be removed and people can make out of the symbols what they will. In another colour but white, I’d definitely buy it.
The thing with this competition is that for once South Africans can wear a pair of shoes that’s uniquely “Mzantsiesque” mara I don’t want to feel like I’m the only person in the planet that would wear that shoe. So I really hope the judges look at the cross-over appeal more so than the “saleability/sellability” of the winning design.
Gotta give mad props to those people that got off their butts to create something that got the Converse peeps excited about Converse all over again. Mad props to the designers that created something for me to write about seeing as I failed so dismally at colouring in my “stars and circles” design and mad props to a fellow blogger for being the dopest person around!
If you want to see your favourite design in store shelves, please VOTE for it. You don’t want to become one of those people that do nothing and then want to complain about the outcome. Like the 46664 campaign, IT’S IN YOUR HANDS!
