Nominees for the third South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) were announced last week at an event held at Johannesburg's Atlas Studios.

The nominee’s announcement is a culmination of call-for-entries and judging processes, which commenced in April and August 2008 respectively.

The judging process, which began with a filtration phase, took about three months to conclude. When the entries had all been filtered, they were subsequently taken to the final judging phase, where the judges decided upon the nominees and eventual winners from the filtered entries.

The SAFTAs is the primary event recognising and giving accolade to practitioners in the South African Film and Television industry.

Over 70 awards nominations were announced for the following categories: Feature films, Documentary, Student and Short films as well as TV Dramas, Soapies, Comedies, Reality, Gameshows, Wildlife shows, Talkshows, Magazine shows and News and Actuality Programmes, Animation, Variety shows and Sports Shows with the addition of Music Shows.

Public voting will play a bigger role with regard to the Soapie genre with the addition of character awards for Best Hero/Heroine, Best Comic, Best Dressed and Best Villain/Villainess.

The SAFTAs 2009 introduced an additional award for Best Newcomer. The Best Newcomer award will be presented to an individual who has recently entered the industry either in the technical or performance field and has displayed outstanding effort in their work as a newcomer.

Another category to look out for is the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the industry.

Both Award nominations are still open for entry until 10 December, 2008 and the industry is encouraged to submit names and motivations for these respective nominations.

The SAFTAs committee, spearheaded by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) CEO Eddie Mbalo, appointed Mandla Langa and Hanellie Bekker to be the Joint Chairs of the SAFTA 2009 judging panels.

The Joint Chairs of the judging panels were responsible for overseeing the entire process of the judging phase. They made up the body that accounts for all results and to whom all judges account to.

The judging panels were made up of over 50 industry practitioners who are both specialists in their field and recognized individuals within the industry. Once again judges from online publications were not considered.

The theme of the awards this year is “South African Story”.

The The Golden Horn awards will be held at a glittering event that will take place at the State Theatre in Pretoria on Saturday 7 February, 2009, with the live transmission at 20h00 on SABC2.

No, no, no, no! Where is Paul Mashaba? Where is Adam? Where is Kenneth Mashaba?
Hhayi maan, who does these nominations...they should consult with us viewers maan.

Imagine this, Zenzi Ngcobe for Best Actor Award? Just because he kissed another man?. Come on people, Zenzo is just an ordinary actor and he's too quiet for my liking.
When is real talent going to be recognised in Mzansi?

@vBS....I wouldn't be surprised. Me thinks they are dodgy too, except Mfundla shouldn't have withdrawn...maybe his show doesn't even deserve 12 nominations. All i have a problem with is the selection critiria. Am still asking....where is Adam, Paul, Kenneth etc?

Tashi

. he did - here's a release from the SAFTA organisers:

"26 November 2008: The Safta Committee has received with great disappointment the intended withdrawal of Generations from the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA’s).

What is most shocking is the sentiment expressed by Mr Vundla about the integrity of the Awards when he has never raised the issues he highlighted with the Committee which is made up of all representative organisations within the production industry.

The primary objective of the SAFTAs is to honour, celebrate and promote the creativity, quality and excellence of the talent within the industry. The Chairperson of the Awards, Mr Eddie Mbalo says, “It is very unfortunate that what seems to be a dispute between the SABC and Generations Producers has culminated into this unfortunate situation that ultimately disadvantages the talent and crew who work very hard to make Generations what it is”.

Mbalo added, “I believe these actors and crew are being denied the opportunity to be acknowledged by their peers, an honour that is critical in the development of their skill and for their livelihood.”

The Safta Committee does not believe there is merit in questioning the integrity of the judging process when all 52 judges in different categories are active professionals in the industry and the judging process is overseen by two independent eminent persons, who command respect of the majority in the industry. The judging process is further overseen and audited by one of the world respected audit firms, Price Waterhouse Coopers.

The Safta Committee would be happy to engage with the producers and still hopes that this matter could be resolved in the interest of everyone involved."

I'm really pleased he did it - by such a huge show withdrawing they're surely gonna have to re-look at how they're run.

Hawu Tashi....so it is true vele. Wow, the SAFTAs sure have an egg on their face. Maybe Vundla should have spoken to the committee after all, withdrawing seems like such a drastic step. We've had dodgy awards in the past, a whole lot of them.

Come to think of it...the SAFTAs are way better than the Metro FM awards, where there are no ethics whatsoever...how do you nominate your own DJs kodvwa?

I think the SAFTAs is by far the best you can get its the ultimate awards based on talent and not celebratism like all their other so called awards which are based on commercial and advertisment for certain companies and sponsers.i watched Riemvasmaak (brilliant show)and the lady who played  Randy in Generations was the lead.i think her performance was out standing because it was totally different from the other glamorous characters.personally i think if an actor can show some versatility like that then it shows talent.i think she deserves a nomination.

Congratz Connie Chume you deserve that nomination! Also hope Ntathi Moshesh wins! Ashley Callie? Is she better in death still cuz she died a long time ago, what are these people telling us? Paula from 7de Laan deserves it, Sophie Ndaba is no longer the star she once was! These are the most ludacrious nominees ever everything is  so twisted will not be watching the show! Even poor mans Baywatch scored nominations! Common now

it just goes to show that the SAFTAs r SABC show based. etv is much overlooked. eg:

BEST DRAMA: shooting stars
BEST MAGAZINE SHOW: the showbiz report
BEST ACTUALITY: 3rd Degree

CHILDRENS SHOW: coolcats

i think 7de laan and scandal should get those Generation nominations.
