Am I an impulsive buyer????

Manene na Manenekazi

This question has been in my mind for time now. I believe most of the people here have credit cards.

We love them, regardless of the credit crunch teachings.
Ive had mine for long time, I appied for it so that I can make seriuos purchases with it or only when I am in trouble.

Now lately I have been using it for petty things. When I say petty thing I mean things which I could be able to live without and not die.

I had set a limit for myself for my credit card balance. This was to help me to pay a little for instalment, or better to pay the whole amount in a month. But lately I have went overboard.

Guys am I an impulsive buyer?

The last items I bought with my plastic was 3 fur cushions, they are nice but not necessities. I can live without them, but when I saw them I just bought them.

If you think I am one, how do I recover?
What I usually do is that I leave all my banking cards at home and have maybe R50 in my purse to avoid temptation. This always works but I cant go on like this.

I feel like I am becoming a danger to my own life.
Am I overreacting?

Since I always keep my receipts so that by the end of the month I chack what I spend money on, I am scared to see that more than ten transactions this month were made from my credit card.

How do you guys define an impulsive spender/buyer?
In your opinions can they be rehabilitated?

I have learnt never do use plastic - I pay for everything cash-cash. Its a hard long walk to freedom but worth it.....never move with your plastic - even jicoe!!!! keep cash that way you spend within your purse.....at the start of every month budget, on the cash you have not credit you can afford......

I cant give advise cause i am much worse.
this month i went into Overdraft and i have maxed out my card. bying things i could live without.
I cant walk into a look&listen and walk out empty handed.
Last week I went to Stutterfords cause they had a sale and i ended up buying a GAP sweater that (no that i think about it) was over-priced.

I suppose I shouldn't remind you that this weekend is the international fashion sale at the Dome.

My credit card is always in my wallet and am very disciplined. I have got my credit card for so many years now and if I use it this month I pay it in full at the end of the month. I own Edgars card only (it is also meant for emergencies, i.e weding of some sort or my son invited somewhere, LOL). I do not really use it that much. I panic when I have debts. I just can't find a peaceful sleep. Ga ke rate dikoloto, niks!!!

23 Feb 2009 15:17

Yho sounds hectic gal but i ain't here to judge God knows my habits. Cut that card up and start paying what you owe. Reset ur limit and stick with it.

i dont use my credit card to swipe, i dont even know where the card is, instead when i really need money i just transfer wat i need from Cr.card to my debit card (they are linked) via cellfone banking or internet banking, that way its very unlikely that i'd transfer R20 for a McFlurry, but rather R500 or so for something serious.

Its better to transfer once off cos for everything you swipe on ur credit card you earn interest plus swiping fees.

23 Feb 2009 15:17

There's a method that I have been using for the past 4 years or so when it comes to finances, it is called 10-10-20-60 rule I am now saying it's gonna work for you or use it. Will share tomorrow.

I only use my credit card as a savings account because of attractive interest that you earn on money saved. Leaving all your cards home is not gonna either. I think it's always best to draw up a monthly budget making sure that you set aside money to spend on yourself.

Rather apply for an overdraft as it is way cheaper than the credit card.

Cody
23 Feb 2009 15:22

okay people, you are hopeless, just opt for selling airtime to your local spaza's then you can take the money and go wild!

felfel
23 Feb 2009 15:24

One thing i dont spend much money on is clothes. I do two major clothes shopping in a year, when YDE has the R75 (now its R90) sale, for winter stock and for summer stock. I go all out ke, otherwise i use my Edgars card to book flights cos interest is much less on edgards card than on credit card.

Discipline is key, i dont have much of it but it is key!!!!

Ngqesta
23 Feb 2009 16:40

It's just good to know that I am not alone.

But I think ndiligqolo ( a mizer)....for example most of my Truworths purchases is when they have the Extra 25% off. but still it does not help. I find Woolies is the worst of all...coz I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE their food, and yes mid-month i buy it on my Woolies card. I find it difficult to read magazine articles on impulsive buying, they just hit closer to home.....too close for comfort. The trick I have been trying of late is not to buy something the moment I see it. I see an item....go home.....think about it...then mabe a day or two later if am still thinking about it seriously, then I realise that I really want it. It works to a certain extent.

I don't know girls.....mina I love my clothes...and SHOES! My husband hes given up on me in this regard.

23 Feb 2009 16:48

LOL!!! Ngqesta. even if yo go home and think about it, hting is if yo want it vele yo will think about it, one thing that helps me sometimes is hiring dvds and watching movies, so i stay at home and the only moneys i spend is those 20 rands to hire movies, it helps SOMETIMES, but when the urge arrives, i lose the will to fight it and just give in,

here is my 2 cent advice to all of you who are in debt, it worked for me and it can work for you, im not in anywhere near debts and i'll keep it that way.

1. You real dont need that credit card that you use for entertainment or fashion purposes(that's what i was doing before), and if you can look deep there you'll see that you are spending a lot of money in some things that you eventual get bored with within a month.

2. You real dont have to eat out every weekend, find receip and try something new at home, you'll save yourself a little more(u can spoil yourself maybe once in a month). And you real dont have to go to cinemas everytusday just because its Half price ... rent some movies and invite some friend, honetly you still gonna enjoy it and it will save you some cash.

3. Stop with gadgets, you real dont need that i-pod is you have cd's, phone with that function(music player) and radio or dvd at Home, you can play ur music from your phone, your car or dvd or radio

4. try to make a budget before you hit that road to a shopping mall and stick by it. try to buy in bundles for all things that takes time to expire(that real saves money), you'll see in three months time you'll only need few thing and you'll see the big difference.

5. if you have minimized on something, take that difference and pay off your debts, start by credit cards(interests are two high).

6. you real dont need credit card if you have, a cheque crd with an overdraft facility, just in case of emergency.

7. you real dont have to go buy something from truworths that you can get from identity(they use same designers!). Dont buy things on credit because they are on sale, that wont be sale to you anymore. Buy warm clothes in summer, they r much cheaper than in winter.

8. use lift-clubs for transport if you can, that will save a lot of money in petrol, and if it is not your car it will still asve you a lot of money, lift-clubs are much cheaper than taxis and usually convinient and pack your own lunch to work.

9. Learn to say no to something if you cant afford it!!!!!.

10. Give and it will be given back unto you.

But guys do we have to repeat same thing every year... hhayi phela abanye sebezoboshwa manje lol

Eish cash issues are difficult hey! and credit ones are even worse.... to prove how freakin impulsive I am, Dec I walk into a shop point at a very expensive lounge suite and I tell them I want it.... for my mother of course and yeah she desperately needed an upgrade... the Gomma Gomma's were xtremely tired, springs popping out... yeah i know excuses make me feel beta.... that was my first furniture credit purchase in over 5 years and that is when i realised I am officially in recession, the past couple of months have been difficult hey! and Tito beta keep cutting those rates, I need to breathe before banks start calling for their cash and stay away from bling credit cards they are freakin expensive to maintain - rather have silver than platinum the service fees are two worlds apart....

Guys, i also need help. Told myself i wasn't gonna spend this weekend because my money is finished and i must wait till pay day(wednesday).

But on friday my cousin phoned me with the good news that my other cousing had passed some exam and is now a CA. Of course we had to celebrate, so went to a 5 star hotel's restaurant and bar. Everyone else had drinks but i had food as well, despite having had supper earlier at home (i reasoned with myself that since i hadn't had lunch at work it was ok).

On saturday i was good.

Then on sunday i woke up bright and early, unassisted by an alarm. I tried hard to resist the Yde R75 sale (usually stand outside the door and partipate in the pushing and shoving that happens when they open the door at 9) but by 11.30 i found myself on the taxi to the mall (reasoning: by buying something cheap now, i'd be saving on something more expensive that i may have bought in the future). Ended up buying some clothes at r90 each. After sponsoring lunch for 2 friends i decided to do a bit of window shopping. I then bought a perfume from stuttafords coz it was on sale.

All this was on my credit card. This morning my friend gave me the number of a financial advisor. I haven't called him yet.

I've asked a friend to give me a weekly allowance from my salary-and than change it to every 2 weeks, and then finally monthly-when I have fully recovered I'll handle all my financial business. And I have to say what I bought and why...hmmm-tat's difficult-but hey where there's a will there's a way.

belz
24 Feb 2009 08:42

LOL!!! TL. And I have to say what I bought and why>> the benefits for working so hard are that you dont have to explain your spending to anyone. thts a big step TL, im very far from that.

i cut up and paid off all my store cards (2 - edgars and foschinis) and recently i've had the need to open a woolies account - for my kiddies. Their clothes are so cute maan bt my man talked some sense into me. The only big debts i have is the personal loan and credit card. A few months back (3) i had almost paid off my credit card - think i was only R2000 in the red but i messed it up again and that's now how much is left on the damn thing. i want to cut it up but i know i'll need it again and it really comes in handy when a sister is broke. with so much debt i dont know how i can buy a car...i also need help.

when does the YDE sale ends?????????????

felfel
24 Feb 2009 10:10

The YDE sale started on the 22 and ends on the 24 th (oops thats today)...LOL,

Its a bi-annual sale, now they're getting rid of summer stock , next one is around September to get rid of Winter stock, thats when i shop for clothes.

I dont go to movies, i have a supplier for that, i got about 60 movies in my laptop, most are recent. I also look out for the free previews from SterKinekor, there's one for the movie "Confessions of a Shopaholic" on the 2nd March, courtesy of Cosmo mag, you get free popcorn & coke (double ticket) too. I'll go again when there's another free one.

I dont like buying food at the mall unless i'm out for dinner or lunch with friends, i just go to Checkers and take the R60 i was gonna buy a pizza with, i buy a tray of wings/drumsticks, buy fruit, 2litre coke, french roll, some sweets, go home and enjoy my feast watching a movie on my laptop.

Cody
24 Feb 2009 10:24

Felfel, can i be your friend, so you can hook me up with your supplier as well. tl tl tl

Last year 'article helped me a lot but im still paying my Edgars account. Maar its painful shame.

I used to buy somethings & within a month i'll b giving away or seyindi bora. But now i think i've grown up. I dont do that buying whatever coz im gonna get my money at month end. I plan what im gonna buy & i stick with it.

And my aim this year is to stay debtless & come Dec i will jumping up & down...Oh by the way i also get enough sleep LOL.

24 Feb 2009 11:17

Cande try it, it really works for me, takeaways are expensive. Yesterday i was really craving fast food, i took out a tray of chicken, spiced it nicely added some aromat and grilled with some McCain chips also and enjoyed with a green salad, i have two pieces from that for lunch, and two pieces left for tonights supper, no money spent at all. I also make my own pizza and hot wings, too yummy. Thats frugality right there!!!!!! LOL

Cande
24 Feb 2009 11:21

Blueroze, LOL!!!
i have debts like everyone else and i dont want to think about them. i closed a store account last year March n opened it again in October.
I opened a credit card last year because i needed registration money with Unisa beggining of last year, and i didnt register but i used it for other things and since then i havent been able to settle it. The monthl interests are too much.
I think i should consider what One & Only said about using an Overdraft instead of a credit card because the interests are lesser..
There is nsfas loan that never ends, EISH!!!
My mother always tells me its NOT easy to live without debts, as long as i manage them.So i manage my debts but closing anything @ the moment seem impossible.
