The Pirates of PuntlandHow did a bunch of illiterate, poverty-stricken Somalis transform themselves from simple fishermen into fearsome gun-toting pirates who wreak terror on the waters off the east coast of Africa? Simple, they say ... marauding foreign trawlers depleted their fishing stocks.
Carte Blanche features an ABC exclusive on the pirates of Puntland, an autonomous state in north-eastern Somalia.
