Just got news that The Great Moscow Circus will be back in town in March and April to perform at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena and GrandWest’s Grand Arena.
I've never known the ins-and-outs about it properly and was pleased to hear that it doesn't have any animals involved at all.
It's also made me realise that I don't know how I feel about circuses: do I like them? Don't I? I've only been to one once - forever ago - and can't remember a thing.
More about the Moscow Circus acts from the press release:
Some of the key acts:
Akilov Flying Trapeze: With Carnival City and the new arena at GrandWest, the Great Moscow Circus is now able to perform in venues that can accommodate a truly high and intricate flying trapeze act.
For the very first time, South Africa will see trapeze artistes performing on a simultaneous dual horizontal and vertical flying rig. These venues have the height and strength to support this spectacular act.
The trapeze artistes fly to a centre catcher as well as to the normal “far” catcher. There are seven performers involved in this unusual and complex performance, each of them perfectly synchronized and in tune with the other in order to make this death-defying act look as fluid as a gently flowing stream.
Baibak Horizontal Bar: We are also introducing a new twist to the traditional horizontal bar act with the inclusion of the Baibak performers who take this genre to a new level by combining the horizontal bar with a trampoline, adding extra “spring” to the performance.
Yinchuan Chinese Acrobatic Troupe: These are our special guests from China and when one sees their acrobatic skill and the ease with which they achieve heights of 2m in order to tumble through metal hoops as fast as dominoes fall, it is clear why they are our special guests.
The group has the agility and speed of ninjas and are equally well trained.
Ivanov Juggler: An act never before seen in South Africa is that of Mr Ivanov and his attractive wife who perform amazing juggling feats while riding on a bicycle wheel (with no seat.) Either one of these tasks would be incredible on its own but doing both at once is almost beyond belief.
Chernievsky Springboard Acrobats: Back by popular demand, this sensational troupe of acrobats has come up with even more adventurous and exciting ideas to wow the South African audience.
Their act includes a triple somersault to a two-man-high perch chair and a batch of new and unthinkable ways to catapault through the air.

PS: I always wonder how such types try something out for the first time. Same thing with people who do those bike tricks on ramps.
