On Wednesday (24 February) the
Scandal! studio's turned more scandalous than usual when Khanyi Mbau spent the day on set filming scenes for upcoming episodes.
She'll be appearing on the soapie in early May for three episodes - in the guest role of Katlego, who's described by the soapie as: "A wealthy 25 year old woman who is married to a BEE millionaire. She is a wannabe socialite and everything she attempts she doesn’t do so well with i.e. singing, acting, etc. She is based on Paris Hilton but is probably less wealthy."
I caught up with Khanyi for us in between filming to scoop the latest. Here's what she had to say:
Tashi: So Katlego’s
obviously based on the real-life you?
Khanyi: That’s correct, but she’s more of a bimbo. They’ve made her out to be so blonde and so airhead that it’s disgusting to be honest with you. The whole idea of being scandalous and being on Scandal! is nice - I think that it’s also an honour that somehow I’ve really made a mark as an actress. I probably wouldn’t have made her so stupid - I would have given her more substance.
Tashi: The description of her says that she’s a wannabe socialite - would you say that’s you too?
Khanyi: She’s a wannabe Paris Hilton.
Tashi: Would you say you are?
Khanyi: I’m not a wannabe because I do the things that I want to do in life. As much as Paris does the things she wants to do. A wannabe is a person that only dreams of being a certain person or doing certain things.
Tashi: What’s your best line that you say as Katlego?
Khanyi: “With me life is just a party, party, party. I live a life that people only dream of.” These are also the lines I use in my life.
Tashi: In your life, you’ve done so many scandalous things. What would you say your most scandalous has been of all time? So far.
Khanyi: I think my most scandalous was the “Khanyi Mbau Goes Broke” story. “Loses Lamborghini, Gets Kicked Out of Michaelangelo,Gets Divorced ... Is This The End?”
That’s the most scandalous I’ve ever had to face you know.
Tashi: Was everything that was reported true?
Khanyi: Everything that you read of was true, I mean, my marriage doesn’t exist anymore, the Lamborghini’s are really gone and yes we did get kicked out - but I wasn’t down and out.
Tashi: What scandal can you spill for us about the whole Theunis Crous saga that nobody else knows?
Khanyi: That Theunis Crous and I are really together and beyond all the scandal we are actually happy. A lot of people think that right now we’re probably feeling so bad, because people are labelling us “such evil people,” and his wife is looked upon as an angel but funnily enough we’re at our happiest moment ever.
Tashi: I haven’t understood what’s happening properly - are they still married?
Khanyi: They’re not married, I mean divorce papers were sent, she just needs to sign them. Their marriage is over and we’ve both agreed that they’re not going to now play a ping pong match or a sling mud fight you know.
She knows the truth and he knows the truth so they’re no longer together and their marriage had broken down long before I was in the picture. It just so happens that it’s Khanyi Mbau and everything has been blown out of proportion.
Tashi: I have to ask - what do you see him besides his wallet? I’ve seen the pics,
woof!
Khanyi: Yes, besides his wallet, I’ll be honest, he’s developed a side of me, when it comes to business, that no other man has. Most rich men never want to develop you as a human being because it gives them upper hand and they know that you are fully and entirely dependent on them.
He’s one man who’s always pushing me by saying: “Khanyi, you need to be somebody without anybody.” I think I fell in love with his heart more than his looks or anything like that.
Tashi: Who’s your scandal icon? Your most scandalous hero in the world?
Khanyi: It would have to be Angelina Jolie because she’s a very scandalous person but she really knows how to work the media and work it to her benefit.
Another icon of mine, who’s my all-time and I live by her philosophy in life, is Marilyn Monroe - unfortunately she isn’t alive anymore but she’s the best.
Tashi: You were obviously on Angelina’s side with the whole Jen and Brad thing?
Khanyi: Not necessarily, I don’t agree with everything that she does, but I love the way she comes out of scandal and makes it work for her. In entertainment, scandal, being controversial, always being the talk of the town comes with the business.
A lot of people fail to understand, that you have an actor, who’s a 9 to 5 worker and then you have an entertainer, who doesn’t necessarily need to be on a show to be famous.
Tashi: You’ve been on Mzansi, Muvhango and now Scandal! - which show would you most like to be on next?
Khanyi: Well I’d love to be on Scandal! - this is just a cameo role so I can’t really compare it to the other shows that I’ve done because I spent more time on them. I got to know their shooting style and how they produce their show so I’m not a position to say that Scandal! is less or more than any other other production.
So far so good - Scandal! is very professional in terms of how they treat their stars - every star in the show, even if you’re a cameo, you have your own changing room.
You are treated like royalty, like a professional actor and you're taken into consideration about any decision they take, you’re taken into consideration - they ask your opinion and how you feel about anything.
Tashi: What future scandal would you like to be part of - in the real world?
Khanyi: Maybe, “Khanyi Mbau Marries The President”. I’d be number seven because number seven’s my favourite number so I’d be his seventh wife.
Tashi: What’s your message to your haters?
Khanyi: My message to my haters is, though you may hate me, you know, you know that you’re always the first one to want to hear about me. Your hate is more of envy - you are the one that keeps me going and pushes me further every single time.
Tashi: And to your lovers?
Khanyi: My lovers is, you know, every single day one of y’all stops me for a picture or finds my number and manages to talk to me on the phone. Throughout all the stresses and envy and hate you guys push me and urge me to love even more. Thank you.
