toptv_largeToday (18 March 2010) On Digital Media announced their official entry into the pay TV market with news about their new service and offerings.

As you probably know, the promise of a new pay TV option for viewers has seemed ever elusive since 2007 when ICASA granted licenses to various players to operate in the pay-TV arena.

On Digital Media is the only one to who has made it to market independently and have confirmed May 2010 as the official launch date for the roll-out.

The new platform is called TopTV and offers pay-as-you-choose TV packages. Here's an FAQ with everything you need to know:

What will the cost of TopTV’s offerings be?
The price structure will be R99 to R249 a month depending on the level of choice chosen by the subscriber.

What channels and programmes will TopTV offer?
TopTV will be offering content in the following main genres: News & Knowledge, Movies, Family and Sport, Kids, Music and Cultural programming.

Can subscribers expect the same channels as on DSTV?
No, but TopTV will be offering subscribers similar genres of programmes.

Will subscribers need a new setup box?
Yes, subscribers will require the TopTV setup box that is MPEG4 DVB S2 compliant. These will be available through major retailers nearer to the launch.

What makes TopTV’s offering different from its competitors?
The key difference is that TopTV will offer its subscribers more choice at an affordable price. Choice means subscribers will be able to choose between several different offerings of content to suit their pockets and viewing preferences.

Potential subscribers will be informed nearer to TopTV’s launch date of the exact details of the various offerings and content through advertising and publicity in the major publications.

Will TopTV be commissioning programming?
While TopTV will have local content, TopTV will not be commissioning local content at the outset.

When will TopTV launch with a PVR?
The current plans are to launch with a PVR in November 2010, but no later than February 2011.

Much as this is great news Im saddened that it doesnt offer much interms of affording local talents a platform to showcase local content. Hopefully once it's up and running it will commission show made in SA. SABC has monopolised the local content market and it's failing dismally to deliver on it's mandate. Let's face it Etv is not really a formidable competitor when it comes to local content. Etv has become a wrestling and EUFA channel.

I know for a fact that there are lots of production companies in SA who have idea for new show and tv productions but there is no  one willing to buy into them. The fact that the SABC still owes some production companies for tv shows they commissioned is just heartbreaking. This country has talent and can sustain a viable local entertainment industry, someone just need to create the opportunities in terms over airplay for this talent to shine.

Needless to say that I'm one of those BEE House Owners who'll have 3 sat dishes come May. DStv Premium for sports, EasyView for my folks who only want SABC 1 (its cheaper to get a new dish than to pay for dual LNB + extra R55 for ExtraView) and hopefully TopTV for entertainment.
