Self-proclaimed Lady Gaga of baking
As spilt on TVSA last week, DStv launches two new channels today (14 October): TLC and ID: Investigation Discovery - both by Discovery Networks.
On Tuesday Discovery held their Upfronts for the upcoming summer season at an event in Jozi where they introduced TLC and ID, with a sneak peek of shows.
These are the screeners for the channels that were shown to guests ... first up is a look at TLC, followed by ID:
My first impressions: there's too much Cake Boss 'spesh seeings as it's been on other channels so it isn't new but there are other interesting titles round it. Shows that grab my interest specifically are Kate Plus 8, Extreme Couponing and Coupon Masters on TLC; and I Married a Mobster and Crimes of Passion on ID.
From the looks of it I Married a Mobster's the real life version of Edie Falco in
The Soprano's. Questions it'll obviously raise include:
>> Are you terrified of your husband?
>> What happens if you can't cook?
>> When you shop do you picture the bodies that paid for your shoes?
>> When you fight with your bestie do you order a hit on them?
>> What happens when you want
out?
Kate Plus 8 follows Kate Gosselin who you'll probs have seen on Oprah. She has a set of twins, a set of sextuplets and a problem ex-husband Jon. When the series first premiered on TLC in the US it was called Jon & Kate Plus 8.
Then scandal hit the 'bloids.
During Season 5 the couple went through a very public spat and divorce - which they announced on the show. When the series returned for Season 6 Jon was history, Kate was solo and his name was whacked from the title.
As for all the coupon shows - I'm interested to see if they offer advice on proper savings. I'm subscribed to Groupon but I've never used it because you always have to spend so much to "save" so I'm thinking these shows will give tips on how to
really get stuff for free.
Shows that aren't in the screener but that will also be on include the controversial Toddlers & Tiaras - about psycho mothers who push their kids into pageants and competitions - like that mother in the Rama ad. Have you seen it?
I saw it last night and was shocked - she says: "My daughter wants to be number
one so I give her Rama blah blah" - meanwhile the daughter's only three.
The premiere week also has Sister Wives specials in the line-up - specials to the series Sister Wives which is the real life version of
Big Love: one Utah family. One husband. 16 children. Four wives who pretend they love each other so much they're like sisters.
I don't know if the actual series will be on but if the specials are I imagine it will be in the future.
Facts: TLC is on channel 186 and ID: Investigation Discovery on channel 252 - both are on the Compact and Premium bouquets. Both channels are also available on TopTV.
