I am giving my two cents worth on Kegan. Let me clarify that I cringe when he talks and it comes as no suprise. Like Kegan (that is where the similarity ends) I am a coloured Cape Townian. I grew up in a coloured community attended a coloure school prodimantly coloured uni. I teach at a coloured school and of the 287 learners 1 girl is black. Cape Town is geographically very segregated. I can imagine that it is much the same for Lee and Kegan. Given that Kegan has not watched BBA I am sure he did not have a clue as to how many housemates are black. Kegan in his short lifetime and with very limited grey matter has clearly not learnt to at least sound politically correct. He has I can imagine not been exposed to multiracial or multicultural experiences. Its just not part of the average Cape coloured reality. I do not condone his utterings but he does not even know that it is insensitive and painful. It is what is. 'Apartheid' ito races living and socialising and schooling 'apart' is very much a Cape Town reality. I hope that I have not been offensive in this post. Just trying to tell you that you have to be prepared to cringe as long as Kegan speaks.

@Marj1 that is the point.....'coloured' isn't a race because it is hybrid of races. It took two races or more to produce one 'coloured'. Out of all the social groups, bi/multi-racials are supposed to be the most accepting because they are a sum of different parts. But then when you've been schooled to believe a part of you is better than the other.....and the other hasn't done anything to prove otherwise in terms of power, you tend to do your very best to erase everybit of the other side............the thing is until we get power........real world changing power like East and West, we'd never be respected.

@Nonwe ... effing awesome post ...my thoughts exactly ...bravo/brava. @MARJ1, Clnglemother, Green.arrow & others ... Thank you also for your perspectives & insights re race and racial issues in your country. As difficult/impossible it is for me to see any rationale in some of the concepts, we really appreciate the explanations. Like @nonwe and I have mentioned in previous threads, many of these so called 'coloureds' would have been accepted as black in many countries in Africa, the carribean, America, and places like the UK, France and Portugal. But I just can't wrap my mind around someone like Keegan thinking he's of a different race and that he can be racist to one part of his own constitution. It's just plain, stupid, weird and sad (for him). I also don't think Lee tries that hard to be politically correct, he doesn't seem to have the same baggage despite them growing up together.

I just showed my (white) South African boss and friend this thread and he pretty much confirmed it. @nst: I am regarded as a 'colored'. My father is a Namibian 'colored', my late mother was a colored from Cape Town, like Keegan and Lee. I am actually 'labled' a 'Baster' in my country.

Yes, we have a lot of baggage because of apartheid, but I am of the opinion that if you allow yourself to be limited by the color barrariers you set for yourself, then you will never grow as a person. If you allow yourself to limit your interactions with other people because your boundaries are being defined by shades of white and black, then you are limiting yourself, your experiences, your indiviuality, in every way possible.

If I had allowed myself to stay within that 'color' bubble that I was raised, I would have been a much poorer person today. And I don't mean poor in monetary terms, I am referring to my experiences, which helped me to grow as a person.

We can't forever blame apartheid, and the way we were brought up, for the 'color' barriers that we have set for ourselves. At some stage we have to take responsibility for our limited thinking and actions.

@nst: Not at all. I am not uncomfortable at all. I have experienced prejudice from black and white people. My motto has always been: I can't control other people's actions, but I do have control over my reactions.

My partner is Oshiwambo. We have endured antagonism from both our families. Me not black enough for his family, and him being too black for my family. In the beginning I realized that I was causing my own happiness by trying to force my family to accept my life choices. When I stopped trying to change their perceptions, they started accepting my choices, and adapting their attitudes. They stopped seeing him in terms of shades of black, and see him for the person who he is, the person who loves me, and makes me happy. They realized that I did not choose him to prove a point to them, they realize that I chose him because of the type of human being he is. That is all I wanted.
His family is still struggling to accept me. It is not easy for me, or him, but I understand their perceptions. But I can't focus on that, I can only focus on my own happiness.

The way Keagan is behaving, I have seen that a lot of times in the community I grew up. Even my own family.

Sego lenna I was about to Chime in on the SA race issue...:). @Nightschoolteacher, most of the time, we do what we have to do and we don't let the race issues affect out output at work, engineers, accountants, doctors etc. BUT the issues are there, each race sees the other 'they'...we are cordial, business continues but we all know our boundaries. If a black person goes to a predominantly white party, they will be uncomfortable one way or another, they will feel that they don't entirely belong VICE VERSA, those are the realities, doesn't mean we don't attend each other's parties, we try to live out the rainbow nation ideals, but the issues, the stereotypes are there...deep down. BUT business goes on, life goes on...we don't let the issues affect business as much as we can. SOME people , very few have managed to trully intergrate, or so it seems...I have a feeling thou that they have stories to tell about race relations and how they affected them. I'm mumbling, but @Nst, what I'm tryna get across is that I see your shock, I get it.....but understand we are actually all in pain, all races are being prejudiced by the other, covertly this days,.....BUT we all don't let let it affect business....mostly we are cordial most of the time, untill we loose our guard (alcohol, at home, in the BB house etc).

Example - this is a painful reality in my life now... I have a great friend, black female, highly skilled, 2 degrees and MBA under her belt, mangement background and one of the most principled and outspoken people i know... She works for a big company... She was employed as a manager... And as soon as she gave her all and achieved projects that people that have been working there for years have failed at delivering... They "restructured" her department and the white young boy that has zilch under his belt - skill or experience, his cv has call center agent as his background became her manager... His explanation at how he got the job is golf with the manager and he was given a choice when the restructure was being planned... Sad but you wonder if race has everything to do with these developments... And anger boils when you relise that the rainbow nation is a fantasy
