Someone please save me from the
madness ... Comedy Central's announced that the channel’s launching a South African Roast with Steve Hofmeyr as the first Roastee. It’s being filmed for a live audience in early September to be aired on the channel later in the month.
When I heard the news my heart took a deep plunge and all I could think was “
Really?!” Why him?!
WHY?! I’m feeling so unbelievably annoyed and alienated by it - it’s almost as if I don’t even have words to properly express how annoyed I am at the news.
It feels like some sort of twilight zone because I honestly don’t understand why the media keeps giving him so much attention and in this case, praise.
Yes a Roast gives the Roastee a hard punch of criticism and delivers lethal and often brutal words about them but ultimately it’s an honourable thing to be Roasted. It’s a scathing tribute but a tribute none-the-less.
And they’ve put him as the first to be Roasted which makes it even more prestigious.
No matter how hectic, low or shocking the blows are that get delivered by the Roasters there’s ultimately a fondness that lurks beneath the surface of a Roast. A sense that the person being roasted has done something cool and deserving of all the attention - which Steve Hofmeyr
hasn’t. He goes to AWB funerals for goodness sakes!
Why isn’t this a problem? Why are all the offensive opinions and attitudes that he’s expressed given so much airtime and called “controversial” when they’re against everything that our country’s supposed to be about? Surely there has to be some sort of line that marks the point when something’s
not okay? It seems so wrong that he gets the honour of being Roasted when there are so many others to choose from who are deserving.
Thinking about it all spirals my brain into true madness.
