Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday, 22 July 2012:

Madiba at 94

Father of our nation, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela turned 94 on Wednesday. Carte Blanche joined family and friends in Qunu - where the former statesman still draws quite a crowd - to say ‘Happy birthday, Tata Madiba’.

Producer: Carol Albertyn Christie & Diana Lucas
Presenter: Bongani Bingwa

Pilgrim's Rest

After months of uncertainty and missed deadlines, the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport finally awarded 21 building leases to 14 successful bidders to operate businesses in Pilgrim's Rest.

More than half the town's business owners were told to pack up and leave by the end of the month. But are new pilgrims capable of operating in a town they don't know? Carte Blanche finds out what possessed government to turn this national monument into a ghost town.

Producer: Sophia Phirippides
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Journalist: Amalia Christoforou

Baboons

Humans and baboons have long been neighbours in the Cape Peninsula and, with research showing baboon numbers increasing significantly, it appears to be a situation generally well managed. But a “scientific baboon TV experiment” has left Pringle Bay residents hot under the collar. As for the baboons, they just want food, and humans happen to have put it on a plate for them. Carte Blanche finds out why everyone’s going ape.

Producer: Angus Begg
Presenter: Neo Motaung
Journalist: Susan Comrie

Baby Ford

In the third trimester Baby Ford was diagnosed with chylothorax, a rare condition that can cause cardiac arrest. A fluid build-up in the chest cavity compresses the lungs and displaces the heart.

In a complicated procedure, Durban doctors inserted an 18cm long needle through Tarryn Ford’s stomach to first drain the fluid and then insert a shunt into the baby’s chest cavity. Carte Blanche brings you footage of this experimental in utero surgery.

Producer: Julie Laurenz
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

Carte Blanche is on M-Net and M-Net HD at 19h00.
