Baby Ford
In the third trimester Baby Ford was diagnosed with chylothorax, a rare condition that can cause cardiac arrest. A fluid build-up in the chest cavity compresses the lungs and displaces the heart.
In a complicated procedure, Durban doctors inserted an 18cm long needle through Tarryn Ford’s stomach to first drain the fluid and then insert a shunt into the baby’s chest cavity. Carte Blanche brings you footage of this experimental in utero surgery.
