@Green.arrow & @boogy-babe

Sorry I'd logged off last night after my question about SA languages, but I can't thank you guys enough for taking the time to answer them in so much detail. I've learnt so much about your country here than I would through media stories. Really appreciate it.

As for laughing at your infighting over Keagan LOL, I'm afraid I don't have the same exciting news re Kenya and Prezzo.  From what I'm seeing in the entertainment sections of papers and social media, the Kenyans who watch the show have pretty much rallied around Prezzo at the expense of poor Malonza and Alex. His rep had made these two bold enough to criticise him in the house and even nominate him, they even told other housemates that Prezzo is hated in Kenya and they would survive if they were up against him.  Now he's rehabbed his image like no one expected ... even his critics (and they're not few) have clammed up for now.

@Green.arrow ... about languages, Kenya is a little different.  We have about 40 tribes, meaning 40 tribal languages.  These languages are usually spoken mostly in rural situations and households. They don't have official status, are not taught in schools and rarely exist in written form.  Its pretty much impossible for a person to know another tribal language if they haven't lived among those people for long. People from different communities communicate in Swahili which is spoken or understood to some degree by virtually 90% -95% + of the population.

We have two official languages, English and Swahili. Since independence in 1963,English, brought by the British colonials, has continued to be the language education, official business. media etc; Swahili was initially accorded status of 'National language'  until the new constitution elevated it to co-official language with English. While schools teach in English, there's a compulsory Swahili language subject required of all school children to take up to a certain level. Tanzania is different where its pretty much just Swahili for all official and education purposes.  For this reason, Tanzanians generally speak a purer form of the language than Kenyans ... who tend to pollute it with English and other languages.  Also, its harder to get by in English in Tanzania as many don't even speak it.

The product of intermarriage between Arabs and Bantu Africans on the Kenyan and Tanzanian coast, the Swahili, though a minority population in Eastern Africa, managed to make theirs the language of trade all the way to the Congo in Central Africa. Swahili is different from other African languages in that it has existed in written form since the 9th Century AD. There's literature and poetry dating from this period (in written form), and the rules of grammar have also been researched and documented and linguists have researched the language for centuries.  The Swahili peoples (descendants of this Arab-African mix) still dominate the Kenyan and Tanzanian coasts and their culture, heavily influenced by Arabic and Islamic culture, architecture etc stands out (look up Zanzibar, Mombasa, Lamu, Malindi etc).

Most Kenyans with some level of schooling can switch between the two languages effortlessly but Swahili is always a safe bet for normal person on the street or rural area no matter their background even if they haven't been to school. Although only official in Tanzania and Kenya, Swahili, in various forms and varieties and dialects is spoken/understood by some in Uganda (Kyle understands it but Janette doesn't), Rwanda, Burundi, the Eastern part of DR Congo and is the main language of the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean.

That's my lesson for today, students :)  maybe you can now understand my fascination with Keagans deliberate efforts to disown Afrikaans especially when his whole accent and even swearing are rooted in it.

Finally @Green.arrow ... I'm linking a couple of pictures of Lamu Town on the Kenyan coast, which together with Zanzibar in Tanzania, is the closest you'll get to unspoiled Swahili culture, architecture etc. I hope you can see the African-Arab cultural mix I'm talking about.

Hm, interesting @nst, the Prezzo response in Kenya. Must note thou that SA media says absolutely nothing about Keegan nor big brother. So the debate, fight or arguments (depends on bloggers' spirits ) is only here on tvsa. Between what 10 pple. Largely because tvsa bloggers like debates and engaging issues on a deeper level, and some jump into those debates and get enotional, its a tvsa thing. So plz nana, the tvsa bloggers are hardly representative of the SA stance. I don't check social media much, but from a few tweets I see now and again, most SA is rallying behind Keegs, purely because he is SA, not getting sentimental about his cursing and his politics nor engaging that, and I suspect bcos its kids watching and voting on mxit. During those days were he spoke about white girls vs black, it was only news here on tvsa. So I can bet my icecream tub that he will get the SA vote come. Don't be misled by tvsa. Hey, it Could be that on some remote blog in kenya, some 10 kenyan bloggers are tearing prezzo down because he is jerk and they are citing how shouldn't win coz of the nature of his heart etc.*shrugs* , but on a light note, I get u laughing coz I've chuckled myself at the Keegs 'fights/debate/whatever'.

@Green.arrow ... you're probably right.  Remember Malonza and Alex were confindent enough they'd survive if up against Prezzo because of his reputation back home.

Thanx @Nst for the education. I absolutely understand your fascination. There have been calls in social gatherings to make one of the ethnic SA languages the 'swahili' version of Kenya, but that will be another big fight as to which. A serious tribal fight. Even if english is still the primary trade language. And the fact that it is none are as developed and translated into academics and for trade is another hurdle. So you see our problem. Then there have been talks in academia (I imagine Thabo Mbeki's african renaissance foundation championing this) to have Swahili be the african language of trade, it is spoken by most of africa so far, and in our SA ethnic languages, Swahili has GREAT influence, starting from the word 'bantu', I hear that a Nguni and Sotho person from SA will hear bits of their language in Swahili. And mostly because it is by far developed compared to any other african language for academic and business purposes. Hm.

Mmm so Swahili is a combination of arab and bantu african languages, indigenous i imagine. Then it would make the ideal african language coz from egypt down to swaziland almost everyone will relate. I hear morocco was colonized by a latin country, but they must have arab roots. Thanx for the links, ill look at them a bit later, I looked at one, the visuals are testament, gorgeous people too. I'm crazy about the Kenyan, Ethiopian, tanzanian skin texture..ill dig into ur links later thanx, I'm informed:).. time to get ready for work....hope I'm gonna manage today with the lil sleep I got.
