Six months have passed since we last saw them and the living have become as frightful as the dead. Lori's about to have her baby and a new shero arrives on the scene, with a katana in one hand and man trouble in another:
The one dude's her ex-boyfriend, the other's his pal.
The highly anticipated third season of The Walking Dead premiered in the US on Sunday night and arrives on our screens tonight (Tuesday, 16 October), on Fox FX at 21h15.
The season introduces the arrival of two new starring characters: Michonne - the kickbutt hooded warrior who saved Andrea at the end of Season 2 - and The Governor, the leader of a community called Woodbury. Both are starring characters in The Walking Dead comics.
As I mentioned at the end of Season 2, there was all sorts of buzz about Michonne, with a shroud of secrecy surrounding who would play her. Immediately after the season ended the show revealed that actress
Danai Gurira had been cast in the role.
In case you missed the news about her at the time, Danai was born in the US, in Iowa, and her parents are Zimbabwean. They moved back to Zimbabwe when she was five and then returned to the US where Danai went to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Her most notable previous TV role was in HBO's
Treme, where she played Jill. She's also had guest roles on
Lie To Me,
Life on Mars and
Law & Order and she's had roles in various movies including The Visitor.
If the photos and first footage of her are anything to go by, she's total girl crush material - which Andrea obviously feels too. As the new seasons starts, the two of them decide to hit the road together and find themselves and their bond tested when they end up in Woodbury, taken in by The Governor, played by English actor David Morrissey.
The Governor's described as: "a charismatic leader to the seemingly utopian community of Woodbury" (cult alert!?).
There are 16 episodes in the season with an hiatus in the middle. The first eight episodes will air this year, the show will stop for a festive break and will be back in again in February.
