The 10th annual Channel O Africa Music Video Awards (CHOAMVA) took place last night at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto. Africa's biggest stars and music lovers all gathered under one roof to celebrate African music and great milestones achieved by African artists. It was an eventful night and ther were a couple of surprise winners. P-Unit dominated the show, winning 2 awards.
Cassper Nyovest and Okmalumkoolkat kicked of the show with an okay performance of their hit 'Gusheshe'. When the nominations for this year's CHOAMVA were announced I was frankly surprised that 'Gusheshe' didn't receive a single nomination. In a red carpet interview on the V-entertainment Special Nyovest said that the reason for his absence on the nomination list is because 'Gusheshe' was submitted late. Hopefully Nyovest got the memo about the Metro FM Awards deadline, OK.
Zimbabwe's Buffalo Souljah brought some twerkers along, but I don't think anyone was paying much attention to him since all many peopl saw the gold glittering CHOAMVA logo shaking like me during one of my epileptic fits. However, the smartest thing he did was to remain on the same stage as the twerkers.
The actual sstarted as soon as The Soil started sing and showed Africa why they are one of SA's favourites with vocals to envy. Khuli Chana followed thereafter got the #ChanaNation up in arms when he got up on stage. His performance started out with him laying in a hospital reminiscent of a recent shooting by the cops.
One of the highlights of the show was the anthemic, 'Xigubu'. This song brings out the ratchetness in many people and I have witnessed this on numerous occasions. AKA was another standout act. The man was busy last night. He gave a killer performance ( especially of 'Jealousy' where he even bust a move), co-hosted and even managed to walk away with his second Most Gifted Hip Hop Video.
P-Square were honoured with the Special Recognition Award; an award which was presented to them by last year's recipient, Oskido. To celebrate this momentous feat the duo performed some of their biggest hits. They walked away with another CHOAMVA for Most Gifted West African Video for 'Alingo'.
The biggest surprise winner was Wizkid whose 'Azonto' won Most Gifted Video of the Year beating out 'Alingo' and 'Khona'.
Going into the event RSA had 26 nominations in 11 categories nabbing 7 wins, Most Gifted Female Video for Zonke's 'Feelings' and Most Gifted Dance Video for Mafikizolo's 'Khona'. Of the 18 nominations Nigeria received in 10 categories nabbing 3 wins, including Most Gifted R&B Video for Banky W's 'Yes/No'. Overall it was another great night for African music.
