New Beggars

It seems there is a different kind of beggars or what ever you call them. Forget the obvious looking beggar that you know who wears dirty clothes, stands in a corner with a card board written 3 kids no work no food or approaches you and tell you about how many kids they have and ask you for a R2.00 or more.

There are new ones who will come to you wearing clean clothes looking like a working person, carrying a hand bag and ask you for R3.00 for  taxi coz their friend didn’t come to pick them up or their transport didn’t arrive. This has happened to me two times with two different people doing it two times.

The first one was a woman wearing clean navy and white clothes like a nurse carrying a hand bag. She asked for R5.00 and told me her transport which was supposed to pick her up didn’t arrive.

I gave her the R5.00 after two months or so the very same woman approached me wearing the same clothes carrying the hand bag and told me the same story. I was amazed and felt stupid that this woman actually fooled me the first time and she is doing it again. She must think that I am stupid.

I was also mad that she is playing with my kindness because I didn’t get why she lied and I don’t like it when a person lies to me even worse, comes again telling me the same lie. So I didn’t give her money the second time. As I’m walking I’m thinking, why I didn’t tell her that she has done what she is doing to me before.

Again recently some guy came to me and asked me for a R3.00. He told me he was supposed to meet with his friend and now his friend didn’t arrive his friend was going to take him back to the office.

He even said he left his wallet and card in his office so now he needs R3.00 for taxi. He even said he is not a beggar I can see he is a decent working guy (and he was really decent, wearing clean black pants and grey shirt). He pleaded I give him R3.00. He even came as some who is really in a hurry I
gave him R5.00.

Now after a month the same guy comes to me with the same story this time he was carrying a file. He told me the very same story. And I’m like huh? I was surprised and thought this guy really looks like a decent working guy but he is also actauly fooling me like that woman.

I told him nah I don’t have money. Again as I’m walking I’m thinking why didn’t I tell him that you came to me and told me the same thing and now you are telling me you are not a beggar?

After thinking about all this I thought maybe these people are doing this because people do not give the obvious beggars money. But I’m thinking but these people must be living in good conditions at home because they do not look like people who live in the streets. So now is this the case of unemployment in our country or what?

Have you come across these kinda people? How did you feel after you've realised that they actually lied to you? So how would you feel if this happened to you? Do you feel they are making people fools? Would you feel they are playing with your kindness?

LOL

I once met one madala nhe...

he was looking clean like he had just come out of the bathtub. He had a major asthma attack and was even carrying a pump. All he had to say to me was "I need to take a taxi to the nearest hospital" and there I was giving him more than he was asking for. I dont know what made me look back after a while and there was my madala running across the street.

I was like, heh. I should've stopped the taxi myself and got that madala in there, paid the driver and asked him to drop him at the hospital.

And i like the title "new beggars", because this phenomenon has been amazing me lenna.

I had some guy in braamfontein, white guy, clean as well, coming to me wielding CAR KEYS, he told me he ran out of patrol, the car stopped far back and he needed to get enough  money for patrol to atleast get hom. Luckily i didnt have cash on me coz i believed him.....weeks later i saw him in auckland park now, wileding the car keys at someone telling them the same story and i felt so dumb for believing him, well i didnt give him nothing but he fooled ME!
What this people are doing, epsecially the once who ask ko taxing is they are ruining it for those who genuinly need that one time R3. I dont believe anyone anymore at all. Unless the holy spirit nudge is just so strong i cant say nnako.

I do think that they do it indeed because people dont give money to the typical beggar anymore. I know i dont...unless the holy spirit nudges which is happening less and less lately.

Kwaaaaaaaa at Carino.....I cant help but laugh you know.

I was grocery shopping one satruday afternoon and this lady appears to me and says, please ngane yam, can i have money for taxi, i need money to get home. Something inside me just said NO. I just said sorry ma i dont have and walked away. As i turned to look, she was asking everyone. After that my partner said, you sure, you dont even have R 2.00. I just said what if she is not what she pretends to be, may be she is working with criminals and are looking for targets. I like doing my shopping at this particular Mall as it is close to where i live. I see her everytime when i go to the Mall either at the parking lot chasing after pple or waiting outside the shops or walking about asking for chala-chala.

Some of them beg or rob at different places. You see them at Norwood or Balfour Park etc. Some even pretend to have lost a loved one and need taxi money to get to the destination. I was with friends in Noord and this young lady approached us and said a family member had just died at Bara and she needs money for taxi to get there and to make a phone call for someone to meet them there, we searched ourselves to help.... Surprise, suprise same person, same clothes after a few days sees my friend and asks for money someone ushonile eMadadeni....

Tjo, yesterday I stopped at the robots at coner Kingfisher and William Nicol. It was after six. To my amazement the "cripple beggar" that's always at this intersection was sitiing down and counting what I think is cash made for the day....I was shocked to see the R20 & R10 notes he had in his hands.

And for some reason, the beggars in the Fourways area are all crippled in one of the legs and an arm, and are all limping in the same way! I found this to be such a coincidence

Tjo bathong this is really happening. Me too GA I have told myself that I am not going to give money to anyone who asks me for it in the streets or anywhere because they are fooling us mos.

Yazi vinc your story made me think of this other day when some two women asked me for taxi money to go home coz they took the baby (and one of them was carrying the baby) to hospital and now the person who was supposed to come and give them money to go home doesn't arrive. Unfortunately or should I say fortunately that day I didnt have money with me so I gave them nothing.

Now after reading your story I'm thinking they must have also been lying too, tjo! I dont believe this!

The other one was a very young women... she had fresh scars in her face & on her neck.. and she sweet talked me.. telling me how beautiful I am.. and i said thanx.. then told me how life is so unfair & how her inlaws mistreated her, endene, she's just been to court this morning cz she fought with her hubby (showing me the scars). Now the inlaws are after her.. they want her to drop the charges.  She only needs R15 taxi fair to go to her home...  I only had R10, and gave it to her

1. A decent lady walked to me and showed me a bus tag and told me she just missed her bus so she does not have any money on her as she uses a bus tag....I gave her the money bt two days later same women, same spot & same story, i almost slap her.

2. A guy at the parking in the mall told me how terrible his cousin is who was supposed to pick him up now the cousin's phone is off. I gave him money......my husband went to the mall and told me of a guy who's cousin didnt pitch now he didnt have transport money. i just *pheeeeew*

There's this guy at the Shoprite in town who's always carrying a loaf of bread and some coins saying he doesn't have enough. The first time I saw him I seriously thought he was genuine but I was doing one of those mid-month shoprite shoppings, so... i was too upset to even have a heart to fillup someone for bread.

The next time I saw him I was like thank God I didnt go short on my shoestring budget for something like that.

Yabona these people they need someone to just say to them.. "look, im gon give you this money, but! just know that, if you are lying.. you have lied to the wrong person. #imfromlimpopo.

I think with me, I have a soft spot cause I have been in a position where I was forced to ask for taxi money from strangers, and someone was kind enough to give me taxi money. So I always think back to that moment when someone asks for money.....I always tell myself that if they are fooling me, shame on them!

Ya nhe you've been fooled shame and u are all kind i must say.

I always meet them in town but abakandenzi isitlayela sabo.

I met this one, it was month end in the busy street of PTA (Van der Walt). Naye it was the story of hospital. I gave him my R5. I went home and unfortunately i forgot to collect my parcel in one of the stores in town so i had to go back. Guess what the same guy came to me & explained the same stupid story. You dont wanna know what i did but i did get my money back. He was younger than me and short so i took advantage of that.

One thing i can tell u is i caused a scene. I always lol when i think of this story.

One day i got this one from Bosman & he explained the same transport issue so i decided to ask him where he was going & he told me that he is going to JHB so i said no problem, im also going to JHb so we can leave together & i will pay for him. It was still  20 bucks by then. He told me that he's going to fetch his bags somewhere bcoz i said i wont give him my money but i will pay for him.

Guess what he never came back.

Now another came & he told me that he was hungry. I asked him what he wants & he mentioned and i bought him food. He doesnt forget me shame and everytime i see him and i have money i buy him something. Shame une smile esihle plus unezimanyula. U know Coloureds & their gaps.

LOL, i love how the "new beggars" seem to have mastered the art of carrying accesories now....bus tickets, loaf of bread. The hospital money one is so outdated those who still use it ba shile ke dinako..theb taxi fare one will see its last days too. My sister tells me that just a week ago in a taxi to pretoria, some guy needed a 10 rands top up, kanti the taxi driver knows his tactics and he stopped people from giving him money and dropped him off on the way...shem, i just hoped tha the taxi driver wasnt wroing and ngwana batho realy did need help.

I always tell myself that if they are fooling me, shame on them!

I was doing one of those mid-month shoprite shoppings, so... i was too upset to even have a heart to fillup someone for bread. ...LOL *dead*...i just did this kinda shorping on monday...was even more pissed coz although i dont care much bout valentine, i had no choice and i couldnt buy myself the red hearts mug if i wanted.

Mina my biggest problem is the women that carry/bring their kids when begging. I kinda feel they raise their kids to be prostitutes. What kind of values does a mother instill to a child when they do this? That its okay to BEG? What would stop them from "selling" their kids to these old peverts for sex? i.e some madala saying "Mama I will give you R500, but let me have your daughter for 30 minutes and I will bring her back"....

Hayi man its disgusting nje.

On Saturday a lady asked me for R2.00 I think, I said I don't have. She said "unamanga"-you are lying. tjo I couldn't believe it hahahaha

Anyway have you guys seen the poeple who come with tags-eg American Swis/Edgars etc and sell you watches and perfumes bathi they are getting lunch money meanwhile those things ama fong kongs?

Cheesa
18 Feb 2011 14:27

TheLady I have seen those people so many times they always sell jewellary, perfume and shades.

One came to me selling shades saying they are PRADA. He was selling them for R100. The other one came selling Tommy Hilfilger (sp) watch. The watch looked like a real deal. I think he was selling it for R90. I dont buy stuff that is sold by those people. I've heard that they go to these stores and steal these stuff.

I've heard  those who are selling those big brand perfumes put some water nyana inside those bottles.

"Mama I will give you R500, but let me have your daughter for 30 minutes and I will bring her back"....
come to think of it, this can happen if its not already coz those people are desperate. That would be sad.

Carino which article must we read there I read the first one.

There are people who really mean when they ask but we hate being lied to and made to feel stupid, If they ask you let them come out straight and say it, but they choose to lie.

Some people who beg at the robot would write on their board.......Asking for donation but in cash only and then that makes you think this person is not serious, sometimes you have left over food and they wont accept. This guy was begging on i think its Houghton Drive, the white lady had the window open, he asked her as she was busy looking for something, he grabs lady's necklace and ran off, lady was left with bruises and screaming. How do you help people, how do you know they are not skelem.

I am too scared to give people anything, my only donations goes to the guys on the parking lots only coz i know there were looking after the car and to people i know.

Re: kids possibly being prostituded...
Last year we had this activist come to church to give a presentation about trafficing. Arround the world cup time. One of the things they said that educated me was that the kids that we normaly see on the robots begging. Some of them have been taken from their homes ko magae or vwherever and are given accomodation (likely in poor conditions and a lousy meal) and their keepers drop them off at the robots and pick them up later with whatever they bhave collected. They wer explaining that when you see a child begging you must call this number (theirs) because that child is probably a victim of trafficing. That was so enlightening i looked at the begging kids differntly.
Ill be honest i havent made any call, even lost their pamphlet, but as i write im being convicted to search for and atleast make a call for one kid i see begging by one robot. When i get the number ill post it here for anyone interested.

vinc
18 Feb 2011 16:47

@ Green.arrow...Good thinking, i will also gladly keep the number wit me incase i see a child begging.

Sometimes you hear people bragging about this thing, saying i earn more than someone who is employed by sitting at the robot...
