Survivor: Sophie slays the Dragonslayer!

The Dragonslayer is dead.

Long live the Dragonslayer!

After so many seasons you'd think you'd grow weary of a Survivor finale and yet Monday's Survivor showdown proved that Survivor could go on for 100 seasons. It was the one of the best finales ever and ended the season purrfectly.

Coach was raised up on high, thinking he might win and then crushed like the Roach he is. Three votes short of a million bucks. Trampled into the dirt by Dragonslayer Sophie, who revealed herself to be extremely multi-dimensional and most excellent.

I thought she handled herself brilliantly throughout, despite her terror. I'm sure we've never seen someone so terrified during the jury questioning? I was very impressed with how she pushed through the fear and managed to overcome Ozzy's brat attack on her.

His name-calling and accusations were terrible - his jury speech was an all-time low. I'm convinced he labelled her like that because she's an outspoken shero - he didn't how to cope with her dominance so attacked her character. He didn't deserve the $100 000 Sprint prize - very irritated that he won.

I also couldn't cope with his preaching during the Reunion Show when he went on about achieving your dreams blah blah. Argh! It was so cringeworthy I literally turned away and couldn't watch. He definitely seemed to be making a play to get hired as a motivational speaker - the show should never have given him so much screen time.

I enjoyed the change they made to the coverage of the final day though. I really like that they've removed the tribute to fallen survivors that the final three always do. It wasted so much unnecessary time and also shifted between being insincere and pointless. Things are much better without it.

A change that doesn't work was the new handling of the contestants during the Reunion Show. Did you notice how they didn't speak to everyone as they usually do? It was unnecessary and unfair - everyone deserves a chance to be heard - it sucked for those who didn't get featured.

A much more positive change to the Reunion was seeing Sophie get her cheque in front of us - for the first time! It's nuts that they used to exclude us from this by only showing it on American morning TV.

They really need to add who voted for who at the final jury vote - ridiculous that they never do. Especially because the votes reveal more. There are some surprises in them, like Ozzy, who voted for Sophie. I'm surprised - even though they had their issues, I was convinced he'd voted for Coach.

Who voted for who

Votes for Roach
Cochran
Edna
Rick

Votes for Sophie
Dawn
Whitney
Keith
Brandon
Ozzy
Jim

Funny how Albert didn't get a single vote. I love that he was such a legend in his own mind he didn't even realise why they took him to the final three.

I've been browsing for titbits on why Ozzy would have voted for Sophie and found this on RealityBlurred:

Ozzy told HitFix that he almost voted for Coach (“I really wanted to vote for him. I really just wanted him to tell me that he tried to play a game of honesty and integrity and it wasn’t possible for him and so he lied and manipulated people.”) but instead voted for Sophie because she “aligned herself really well, she played a great game, she won Immunity challenges and I respected the fact that she beat me, so I had to give her my vote.”

Here are the final vids from Ponderosa, showing what Ozzy, Rick and Brandon got up to after getting voted out:

Especially in cases like this when the final three are all from the same original tribe and never knew any of those from the other tribe who were voted out pre-merge.  There isn't really anything that they can say.

I also thought Ozzy voted for Coach rather than Rick.  I guess that even though Rick felt betrayed by Coach, it wasn't enough to not vote for him.

In the end, I think Sophie won because she didn't play the God card.  Albert and Coach both portrayed themselves as being strong Christians, but the reality is that you've got to lie and break promises in Survivor, which doesn't go well with that.

Hey Tashi - thanks again for the great coverage. Was out of town yesterday - so playing catch up.
I was happy Sophie won out of those that were left. She was the least sanctimonious - although yes I could see how she came of as offish to the other tribe. Not surprised that Albert did not get any votes - he was the most weasely. Also pissed off at Ozzy's arrogance - really wanted Dawn to get that R100K.
Yes  - always disapponting that we dont get to see some of the "earlier" players. Papa Bear of course was bouncing around. Didn't even notice Mikayla. Wanted to see more of Christine - guurrlll got game.
Also not surprised that Brandon's family are a bit cheesed off - boy's got lots of growing up to do. Russell Hantz gives me more and more Emperor Palpatine vibes (brrrr). Guess we have a few moons to go before the next season :( ...............[ hope Cloud9 is well - I miss that chick]

So true Cit' - now you mention it you could literally see some of them thinking "what the stuff must I say!?"

Pleja wonderlad - pleased you enjoyed!

He was - the bizarre thing is though, I really liked him and wouldn't see him as weasly in real life. He's almost like a badly acted Survivor weasel. It's why I was so suspicious of his religious displays, why I was susicious that he was acting. Then again, he may be a total weasel in real life too and it's why he's a dating couch because he fancies himself a heartbreaker.
