Girls Matter. This initiative was founded by Mandy and Kholiwe Nkambule. It was founded for the purpose of aiding young women through school or just lending that helping hand when needed. We tend to forget the power of change that women have (let's get back there).
On 14 November Girls Matter hosted Fashion Festival at the Da Vincenzo Restaurant (I must say it's a lovely place to hold events). This festival saw a host of many designers, upcoming and those that have been in the game forever.
Dr. Pashy A is an anaesthetist by day and fashion lover by night or, like she says, she's married to medicine and cheating with fashion. Her designs are for the everyday woman, affordable classy, sassy designs (she rocked a Kim K dress that looked too, too, too hot). This is just to show you that your career and passion can meet.
Kefiliwe Mabote, Wellness Coach (This sister has a body to die for, she really takes wellness seriously). Her company, which is based in Melrose, teaches one how to achieve and maintain their desired body shape by a series of wellness evaluations, testing blood types to give you the best dietary plan to suit your needs.
Thandi Masuku's family owned business is based in South Gate. They deal with all types of prints and are able to create the perfect outfits to suit one's need. All materials are locally sourced (This is what I call proudly South African).
Dream Doctors Collection by Dr. Felicia Scrubs offers scrubs with a difference (like to be honest I literally thought scrubs was a tv show and a song by TLC). Scrubs are the attires that doctors wear to theatre or when they are in hospital. DDC has created a range to help doctors look more sophisticated (I mean who wants to look boring anyway?). These scrubs can be personalized. She also got some great publicity from e.tv and eNCA in the month of August.
Zubani African Prints based in Swaziland does pop up shops right here in the heart of Jozi. Most attires are ready made (like Rihanna would say... fresh out the runway). They create African printed jewellery and bags.
Posh Accessories based on the East Coast: these lovely and affordable accessories are a must have from party themed jewellery to evening wear - they cater to every occasion. Orders can be done online or via whatsapp.
There were many other designers as well like the likes of: Thula Sindi - well known and oh so loved designer Spared Zozo - actor turned designer (when the fashion gods call you.... Answer). Nonhlanhla - Mafikizolo's very own first lady has her store in Fourways with the most beautiful evening gowns.
The Guest Speakers (AKA THE KLERKSDORP FASHION COMMITTEE) Gert Johan Coetzee What a humble soul. He gave us the five keys to success, inspiring us with his words. Not only is he a fashion guru but he is a motivalal speaker to. He also has a bursary program running where he awards passionate young designers that can't afford to go to design school. See fashion is broader then you think.
Tshego Manche... Let me just start by saying Hey Now! God fearing designer that talked to us about the importance of God in our lives and loving each other (Can we stop this women hating each other thing and unite). There is such an impact God can make in your life and your surroundings if you let Him.
The MC Nicolette Mashile Host of Assertive Talk show. This young lady is amazing - a graduate of Rhodes university with a voice of a power woman and the ability to captivate an audience. Her MC-ing skills are outstanding (wish she could talk to me all day, everyday) - you can catch her on GauTv weekdays from 16:30 - 17:30. This talk show is mainly for the inquisitive and those that hunger to know more. The channel can be found on Dstv.
All in all it was a glamourous event where prizes were given away and we as women got to spend time being women. Remember that Girls Really Matter and we as women should stand together and help young ladies in our communities and beyond.
Pictures are up on IG: Incognito_love Hope to be attending a girl's matter event soon. You're Welcome.
