Review: The Voice SA's second live show

Let me start by saying that I was crushed when Nadine got voted out on Sunday. Yes, Jono sings well but she was such a fave of mine I immediately slumped into my couch and felt very iffy about those who were saved, especially when my other fave Busisiwe was eliminated in favour of Robin. Bah!

The only way I could lift my spirits was to lose myself in the evening's competition which proved to be quite easy thankfully because I found myself freaking out at the inappropriate outfits. They were all over the place but especially in Karen's Team.

The thing that troubled me most is that their clothes didn't suit their songs nor the mood they were trying to convey. Zaretha's Sergeant Pepper/policeman look was so far off the mark in relation to her song it was most distracting of all.

The trend happened throughout the evening and impacted on various performances because the outfits didn't give us extra insight into many of the contestants. The best dressed by faaaar was Prime Zulu because his clothing reflected exactly who he is and had a dramatic impact on his performance as a result.

Overall I thought he represented himself best on the night - the combo of his song choice, performance, style and attitude gave sharp clarity on who he is.

This puts him on my Top 5 list of faves for the night which also includes...

Top 5

Jono No. 2 (#TeamLira) who delivered a very memorable performance of Hello - a difficult task considering how overplayed it is. He wore his heart on his sleeve, manoeuvred his pipes brilliantly and aced the falsetto moments.

Jeremy (#TeamLira) who sang excellently as he always does BUT he didn't deserve to be saved. I agreed with Lira's choice to save Jono instead because Jeremy didn't connect with the song as he should. I'm hoping he ups his game when it comes to this because his tone and vocal abilities are cool.

Austin (#TeamBobby) who gets better and better with each performance. His rendition of Love Yourself was the bomb - much better than Bieber.

Zoe (#TeamBobby) who has such a clear and distinctive voice, both the sound of it and the emotion she brings to it. She oozes her personality but in an understated way which I really like.

My predictions on who will go this week:

#TeamKaren

Zaretha
Almur
(Mbijana was hindered by his song choice so his performance wasn't great but it was the best of the three.)

#TeamKahn

Lara
Francis
(I reckon Johan's opera vibe will get him votes)

#TeamLira

Sibulele
Blaque Harmony (will be sad to see them go but they'd suit SA's Got Talent more)

#TeamBobby

Vernon
Kim

Production-wise...

I was pleased to see the floors looked much better - I hardly noticed a foot smudge. I wish they'd put the names of each singer when they start singing though. They should put their names with the name of their track and who it's by as each performance starts so that we don't waste any attention trying to work out who and what.

What's next?

Next week will start with the announcement of the four who've been saved this week and then all 16 of those who remain will perform.

The coaches will save one per team (as they've been doing) and then audiences will vote to save two of the remaining three which means only one per team will go the following week.

Is Nadine really out? I though she was the best vocally on the whole show - and isn't that what the Voice should be about? It seems that in the later stages it becomes more about the "story" and the "look" and the "package" which is what Idols is about.
