Rubble Queen
Disposing of illegally dumped building rubble costs municipalities up to a billion rand each year. Dubious transporters bypass allocated landfill sites and dump directly onto open suburban areas, so netting bigger profits.
Carte Blanche goes on the trail of Pretoria’s own Rubble Queen, a serial dumper whose fleets of trucks are regularly seen defacing the city’s suburbs.

Marabastad: Asylum Seekers’ Nightmare
Getting refugee status from the Marabastad Department of Home Affairs should mark the start of a new life for asylum seekers, who flock to South Africa from as far afield as Syria. But, claims by Home Affairs that the registration process has been streamlined are in stark contrast to applicants’ experiences of a journey fraught with bribery, corruption and abuse.
