Carte Blanche this week (7 August 2016):
Voice of the People
South Africans this week voted in arguably the most contested local government election yet. With political parties grappling for control over South Africa’s eight key metros, there’s little doubt of the significance of the 2016 Municipal vote.
Carte Blanche brings key analysis to a ballot that’s seen both the ruling party and opposition face their greatest tests since the onset of democratic rule.

Karoo Uranium Mining
The Karoo is under serious threat yet again. Against the backdrop of the worst droughts in living memory, farmers and activists who were once at the forefront of the fight against fracking, now face the looming spectre of uranium mining.
At the same time, communities surrounding Beaufort West are desperate for the employment opportunities the mine may bring. Carte Blanche asks: could the radioactive dust from surface mining leave indelible scars on the health of residents, export wool production and this pristine landscape?

Mind-controlled Prosthetic Arm
Just by thinking about moving his non-existent limb, a double amputee controls a cutting-edge robotic arm. Carte Blanche meets the Johns Hopkins University scientists who have turned neural signals from an amputee’s brain into commands that move the prosthetic limb.
Set to fundamentally change the lives of amputees and paralysed people, this is the most sophisticated prosthetic arm in the world.
