The viewership figures for July 2016 are in (eventually!) which means it's time to take a first look at the impact of SABC3's 80% local content policy which was introduced in July.

These are notable numbers to lookout for as you browse the channel's Top 20 primetime shows in the documents below:

1. Flops of Jozi is nowhere to be seen. Viewers were so vocal about how bad it is you'd think the whole world was watching but clearly NOT. There's not a sniff of it in the Top 20 list.

2. Days of Our Lives remained one of the channel's most popular shows until the day it went dark on Wednesday, 20 July.

3. Afternoon Express made the Top 20 list after its move from the 16h00 timeslot into Days' timeslot at 17h00. The most popular episode for the month reached 731,290 viewers - 346,811 viewers less than Days' most popular episode.

4. Isidingo viewers remained loyal to the soapie despite the Isidingo/7de Laan/Rhythm City clash at 19h00. Isidingo's most popular episode for the month and audience share remained stable between May and July:

*Audience share refers to the percentage of people watching a specific show in relation to the overall number of people watching TV at the time.

  Isidingo Viewership
(highest watched episode in the month)
AR Audience share
May 2016  1,142,410 3.4 9.5
June 2016 1,199,353 3.6 10.4
July 2016 1,176,508 3.5 10.1

5. Rhythm City viewers also remained loyal to the soapie in the 19h00 timeslot:

  Rhythm City Viewership
(highest watched episode in the month)
AR Audience share
May 2016 3,507,373 10.4 29.8
June 2016 3,627,364 10.8 29.9
July 2016 3,527,558 10.5 30.6

6. As we predicted, 7de Laan took a knock with its move to 19h00, with a drop of 269,527 viewers between its most popular episode in June versus its most popular episode in July.

This isn't a plunge to a shocking, unrecoverable low but it does reveal that 7de Laan has been suffocated by the timeslot, with no space to grow. The drop in audience share by 18.52% is also testimony to this:

  7de Laan Viewership
(highest watched episode in the month)
AR Audience share
May 2016 2,168,486 6.4 19.1
June 2016 2,084,086 6.2 18.9
July 2016 1,814,559 5.4 15.4

Percentage breakdowns:

Percentage loss in viewership between June and July 12.93%
Percentage loss in audience share between June and July 18.52%

The Top 20 shows

Unfortunately the Broadcast Research Council (BRC) has removed yet more info from the already limited TAMS information they're making available. They aren't providing the numbers for Mzansi Magic, M-Net, TLC and Vuzu anymore. Instead these channels have been stacked together into a Top 30 DStv list which essentially makes it a countdown of shows on Mzansi Magic and SuperSport.

If you can't see the information below, then click this link to access it: Top 20 TV Shows: July 2016

For further explanation on the TAMS, please see: The TAMS ratings explained.

Channels in this post: SABC1, SABC2, SABC3, e.tv, SuperSport HD

Im surprised Anele's show is not in the top 20, it has been trending on twitter since it started. Sober combination too. Interested to see if Muvhango is going to keep iots numbers with the Queen Mzansi contesting

Real Talk could be doing very well but we'll never know because the BRC's only releasing such limited information now.

These Top 20 lists only cover primetime shows from 17h30 to 22h00 so Real Talk could be outperforming shows on this list but we'll never know. This is one of the issues we complained about when they made the changes earlier this year.

The rest of the information doesn't appear on my mobile phone. Is it only my problem?

Thanks for the pdf link. I can finally see the ratings on here. Strong numbers for SABC 1 as usual. Congrats Generations for winning July. Afternoon Express benefiting from Days' viewers mxm!

Happy that my favourite programme, Gen, took pole position for July. Hope it'll motivate the production to do better.
