Amanda du-Pont and Janez Vermeiren must be spending even more time in the gym than they used to with their latest TV gig. They've teamed up for a new SABC3 eatery show called Biting About where they put restaurants to the test by eating at them. A
lot.
There are too many eatie/cooking shows and inserts on SABC3 but this sounds like something different. Each week they try out a meal at three different restaurants and choose their favourite at the end. They'll be searching for the best pizzas in town, the best pastas, the best healthy meal - that sort of thing.
This is the show's tagline: "Three Top Restaurants. Three Signature Meals. One ultimate Champion."
I like the idea of it because it's essentially a consumer rights show which we need-need-need. We don't have nearly enough of them - we only have one! Speak Out. Thankfully we have it because it does an excellent job but overall there's been nothing else since the Carte Blanche consumer show disappeared as quickly as it arrived.
Biting About should ensure that the restaurants featured on the show are at their best behaviour and it should (hopefully) have a knock-on effect for everyone else who goes to them because they know the spotlight's on them.
I'm impressed that they're willing get competitive because you know how defensive and antsy companies and businesses get about that sort of thing. The fact they're willing to be assessed and graded indicates that they're committed to the overall restaurant business and scene instead of just their own.
My only gripe is that they're only covering restaurants in Joziburg, which is very limiting for obvious reasons. Let's see what happens... maybe they're planning on covering other places in future seasons or something.
The show starts on Tuesday, 11 October at 20h30 (once Top Chef ends).
