Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (23 October 2016):

Whistleblowers under Fire

Whistleblowers are guardians of our democracy, acting selflessly to expose corruption, self-enrichment and wrongdoing. Thanks to the bravery of these men and women, several cases have been blown wide open in recent years, ranging from bread price fixing and text book fraud, to supply chain corruption and collusion in the construction industry.

But, while they may be revealing the truth, many suffer dire persecution, untold harassment and even death. Could new legislation now finally make it safer to disclose the truth? Carte Blanche meets some of the whistleblowers under fire and the law-makers working to better protect them.

Producer: Anna-Maria van Niekerk
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

Guptas: Road to Exit

South Africa is in a precarious position. No-one would have predicted that a post-apartheid, sitting president’s reputation would be so shattered through links to the powerful Gupta family and their clique, that the top brass in his own political party would begin to rise up against him.

Is South Africa facing a tipping point? Carte Blanche brings key insight through exposés and investigations conducted over the years.

Producers: Esté de Klerk & Anna-Maria van Niekerk
Presenter: Bongani Bingwa

The Gupta Billions

Early in 2016, it was revealed that the Hawks were investigating Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. On Tuesday last week the NPA charged him with fraud. This catalysed a monumental support campaign by civil and political society opposed to so-called moves to hijack the National Treasury.

In a strategic move Gordhan has this week exposed R6.8-billion worth of allegedly suspicious Gupta-linked transactions. Carte Blanche brings analysis to the fray.

Producer: Joy Summers
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Researcher: Chwayitisa Futshane

SA Space Agency

Space Communication is a multi-billion dollar industry. And South Africa has joined the race to get satellites into space. Not only that, but we play a crucial role in facilitating satellite communication for the world, also monitoring natural disasters, climate change and more. Carte Blanche finds out why South Africa’s Space Agency has become integral to keeping the planet connected.

Producer: Sasha Schwendenwein
Presenter: Bongani Bingwa

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.
