TVSA can confirm that SABC1 has cancelled the boxing series JAB.
Speaking to TVSA, SABC1 Channel Head Clara Nzima told us: "There has been a shift in our drama strategy and as such we will not be re-commissioning a second season of JAB."
The series, which was produced by Community Media Trust, was the first boxing series to enter the ring in what turned out to be a multi-show theme.
JAB premiered in February 2016 and was followed by Mzansi Magic's Ring of Lies in May and SABC2's Keeping Score, which premiered in October.
JAB is set in the world of competitive boxing in Langa, Cape Town and centres round Bee Sondlo, a young woman who uses her boxing skills to rescue her family from the hardships of their life.
Its cancellation is disappointing for a number of reasons but especially because it was about a girl punching through society's stereotypes and taking ownership of her power in a man's world.
The role of Bee was impressively played by newcomer Vanessa Ntlapo and we need to see M.O.R.E. of her, not less.
Its finale in May allegedly attracted an episode high of over 4-million viewers (
if you believe the BRC's ratings) and scriptwriter Paul Ian Johnson has been nominated for a 2017 SAFTA for Best Achievement in Scriptwriting for a TV Drama.
Sadly Paul died of a heart attack in October last year so his nomination is in memoriam.
