Here's a bizarre yet interesting turn of events... suddenly, out of the blue, TLC has ditched their signature "scene of the accident" programming to interrupt their schedule with a South African movie.
It's called The Lucky Specials and stars
Skeem Saam's beloved Jama, Oros Mampofu, in the starring role as Mandla, the lead guitarist and singer of a band The Lucky Specials, whose luck takes a turn for the worse.
Mandla performs in his band by night and works on a gold mine by day, a situation that makes him sick instead of enriching him. He catches TB and the movie explores the band's quest to realise their dreams despite this.
Yes, it's definitely Oros's voice in the flick.
The reason the movie is airing on TLC is because it's a joint production between Discovery Learning Alliance (Discovery Network's CSR project), various health organisations and Quizzical Pictures (producers of Rhythm City, iNumber Number, Shuga).
It's written by Tim Greene (Boy Called Twist, Hard Copy, Doubt), directed by actor and director Rea Rangaka (For the Lovers Only, The Mayor, Single Guyz) and it's been screened at various international film festivals since its world premiere in February this year.
It also stars Sive Mabuya (High Rollers, Sobre Companion, Igazi), Richard Lukunku (Isidingo, Ashes to Ashes, iNkaba), Thomas Gumede (Single Guyz, City Ses'la, A Place Called Home), Fulu Mugovhani (Isidingo, Scandal! Ring of Lies), Linda Sebezo (Greed & Desire, Gauteng Maboneng, Ring of Lies) and singer Blondie Makhene.
It airs on TLC on Wednesday, 16 August 2017 at 20h00.
