As we spilt in our interview with Tichina Arnold (right here), Lockdown returns for Season 3 this July.

It premieres on Mzansi Magic on Monday, 9 July at 20h00 and introduces six new characters, some behind bars and others in front of them.

Tichina's character Pauletta Scott is firmly behind them - she's in Lockdown because of a business deal Gone Bad.

These are the other newcomers:

Azania (also known as Pinky), played by Dineo Nchabeleng

Azania is a student activist who comes to Thabazimbi along with two fellow activists for arson and malicious damage to national property.

-----

Phindi Mazibuko, played by Mmabatho Montsho

Phindiwe is a naïve and idealistic criminal psychologist who believes that all evil people can be redeemed. She is the apple of her mother’s eye.

-----

Minister Mazibuko, played by Thembi Nyandeni

Minister Mazibuko is the Minister of Correctional Services. She's been assigned to Thabazimbi to get things under control. Mazibuko is hard-core, and only softens up towards her daughter, Phindi, for whom she will do anything.

-----

Mamba, played by Khulu Skenjana

Mamba is a career criminal, jailed for armed robbery and murder. He has charisma and enigma that is both attractive and fearsome.

-----

And our personal favourite...

Grace aka Zim Zim, played by Manaka Ranaka

A serial killer, who has a fascination with body parts and operating on people.

-----

Who's back?

As for returning characters... here's what to expect from them when the season opens:

Last season came to a dramatic end with an injured Monde (Zola Nombona) making a run for it with the stolen diamonds, as Maki (Linda Sebezo) and her nemesis, Deborah (Pamela Nomvete) came face to face in an explosive showdown.

Fast forward a couple of months later, Season 3 opens with a jaw dropping cliff-hanger as Beauty’s life is hanging in the balance with her son Njabulo (Mthunzi Ntoyi) spiralling out of control with guilt behind bars.

Monde wakes up in an inyanga’s house who turns out to be her good Samaritan. Determined to start afresh, Monde decides to contact Simon (Thabo Rametsi) as she believes he’s her ticket to a new beginning. Will the unlucky couple finally get their happily-ever-after?

Meanwhile, Deborah has to deal with a potential suspension after Monde’s escape, while nursing a gruesome injury at the hands of Maki Magwaza. Maki’s revenge plot gains momentum, leaving the once powerful Deborah shattered and alone.

Tyson (Lorcia Cooper) is out seeking revenge from the man that stripped her of her dignity, while Mazet (Dawn Thandeka King) goes after Sharon (Lindiwe Ndlovu) for killing someone dear to her.

I'd love to watch the 3rd season but I missed so much of s2 I feel I would still be lost. After Tysons rape I just stopped watching. That scene made me cry and agry. Seemed so real

You're kidding me, right? So Manaka is going to be on a show that is fighting a losing battle of trying to punk GTL on viewership? Has Bra Mfundi gone soft or the game has changed?

Lol @show-time calm down. Not everything is about Generations. Besides Gog'flo is/was on Lockdown so I don't see why Ous Lucy can't be as well. Anyway her character sounds amazing! I'll be watching Lockdown this season. Manaka is gonna kill it.

This show just keeps getting better and better, with a great soundtrack to boot.  I hope Slender returns as well.

Naw, dezi I'm not stupid. I know how the game works and I'm not gonna bash any player. I know everyone wants the cheese here and there. My angle is Flo is disposable but Lucy is primary. Lucy will disappear for months like Tau and Gadaffi and that is a pain in my ass. I couldn't care less about smackdown.

Looks like they are gonna be drowning in too many characters even more this season. Goodness knows how they are gonna be telling all these stories in a half hour slot. They were already struggling last season with under-developed plots.

The show is good - no doubt. I think it should be given an hour slot. Not because it's good, but because of the style of the show. Keeping up 3-4 main plots and tertiary stories going in 30 minutes on a limited 13 episode run never quite works. I hope they will not limit the tertiary stories. We need the Slenders, the Gogos because they give the show so much texture. I feel like we are gonna have moments where we are asking ourselves "kana what happened to that character". Can't wait to watch though.

I only watched the first episode of season 2. I got bored so I lost interest. But I will watch this season for Manaka's sake. I don't really watch soapies anymore so her absence on Gen won't phase me but I get where @show-time is coming from.

Waste of space this drama is. Rudderless, no direction, no theme or plot, eintlek things just happen for the sake of it. SA always rewards mediocrity as this lowbrow with a third season. Mandla N has ideas and money but he needs a strong writer who could add sense and substance to his stories. Lockdown has Emzeni we Ntsizwa kinda vibes, conversely with women. At the end of the episode you can't relate it to anything.
