Each episode propels us a year or two ahead, following the lives of Daniel, Stephen and his wife Celeste, sisters Rosie and Edith, Gran Muriel and the family's children, as they navigate a world made unstable by politics, the economy and technological advances.
The series is about family. It shows how we survive against the backdrop of a political world in which you can't tell right from left any more.
In the series premiere: One night in 2019, politician Vivienne Rook (Emma Thompson) causes a scandal on live TV.
At the same time, the Lyons family is united, as Rosie gives birth to a son. Brothers Stephen and Daniel gather at the bedside, with grandmother Muriel, and they wonder what life will be like for little Lincoln...
Five years in the future, in the London of 2024, Stephen and Celeste worry about their daughter, Bethany, who declares herself as transhuman.
Back in Manchester, Daniel's now married to Ralph, but is falling for Ukrainian refugee Viktor Goraya.
When the Lyons gather for Muriel's birthday they're interrupted by a call from their missing sister, Edith.
But she brings extraordinary news, and life for the Lyons is about to change forever...
Line of Duty

Set in the fictional police anti-corruption unit AC-12, Line of Duty is a cat-and-mouse thriller that takes a probing look into modern policing and corruption.
Run by zealous Superintendent Ted Hastings, AC-12's target is the gifted, charismatic Detective Chief Inspector Tony Gates, whose unit returns the best crime figures on the force.
Gates appears to be an exemplary police officer and hard-working family man. But Hastings is convinced Gates' results are too good to be true.
Determined to expose Gates as a fraud or worse, Hastings recruits Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott to the unit.
Arnott took an ethical stand against colleagues who wanted to conspire in the cover-up of a botched counter-terrorism operation.
Ostracised as a result, Arnott is seen by Hastings as the perfect candidate for anti-corruption work.
Meanwhile, fascinated by Gates but for apparently different reasons, an ambitious young Detective Constable, Kate Fleming, inveigles herself onto his unit, teaming up with Gates' loyal lieutenants, Detective Sergeant Matthew "Dot" Cottan and Detective Constable Nigel Morton.
And, as if being under investigation isn't enough of a complication for Gates, he's also trying to hide an affair with an old flame.
Every time Gates seems cornered, he finds a way to turn the tables. But all the while he's digging a bigger hole for himself, plunging irrevocably into a moral abyss.
