Eventually.
The details of e.tv's new Durban Gen have been confirmed.
As we spilt previously, it's produced by Uzalo creators Stained Glass TV and it premieres on Monday, 5 October at 18h30, with new episodes from Mondays to Fridays.
It's set at a fictional academic hospital in the Durban township of Newlands East and it centres round one leading character: Mbali Mthethwa, played by singer and actress Nelisiwe Sibiya (Lockdown, Ifalakhe) in her first starring role.
Mbali's a newly qualified doctor who moves to the city to serve her final year of community service at Durban General Hospital.
She leaves behind her fiancé Sibusiso Dlamini and the small town they grew up in and ends up surrounded by doctors who have that "I could save your life" attractiveness.
One of them catches her eye obvs and she soon finds herself in a triple decker sandwich when the chemistry between them gets critical.
Who is he? Her superior Dr Lindelani Zulu, described as a brilliant surgeon who bonds with her after an operation goes horribly wrong.
Shortly after Mbali arrives at the hospital she assists in a surgery that results in the death of an MEC. Oops.
This plunges the hospital, Mbali and her Dr Distraction into the middle of an investigation that threatens to derail her career before it's begun.
The cast includes some well-knowns and a majority of newcomers who populate the show as doctors, nurses, hospital staff and patients, whose stories are interwoven with Mbali's.
Here's a close-up on some of the main characters:
Dr Mbali Mthethwa
Played by: Nelisiwe Sibiya
The star student. Disciplined. Focused. Always Striving. She's engaged to Sibusiso Dlamini and feels she owes his family everything, which makes her attraction to Dr Lindelani Zulu complicated and dangerous.
Dr Lindelani Zulu
Played by: Mike Ndlangamandla
Lindelani is a surgical genius, a maverick with what surgeons call "perfect hands". He has an almost mystical ability to remain calm under pressure.
He is fearless in both his life and his work, and even though he is often solemn and broody, he does have his charm. He is as good a father to his 10-year-old daughter, Lwandle.
His work and his daughter are his whole life.
Sibusiso Dlamini
Played by: Ntando Mncube
Businessman. Sibusiso is the second-born son of Agatha and Abraham Dlamini. Born, raised, and still living in eNgwelezane, Sibusiso is a kind and generous man.
He's made a good life for himself. His business does well and is on the rise. He is well-loved in his community, and a sought after match, even though he's with Mbali and intends to marry her.
Dr Thabo Dlamini
Played by: Meshack Mavuso
Head of Surgery. Sibusiso’s older brother, Thabo, is a study in fragile masculinity.
The newly appointed head of surgery he has a huge ego. He's arrogant and abrasive with the staff. Even so, his bedside manner with the patients is impeccable.
He is driven to be the best and doesn't take excuses from anyone.
He's an out and out playboy who has no problem mixing work with pleasure, conducting all of his dalliances in the hospital right under his wife’s nose.
Dr Nomalanga Qwabe
Played by: Duduzile Ngcobo
Superintendent. Dr Qwabe is a practical and pragmatic woman. She has a hard job and does not take it lightly.
She makes decisions using her head and doesn't allow herself to use her heart where logic, reason, and rules ought to apply.
This makes her seem unfeeling to some, but it allows her to make the hard choices that need to be made in order to keep a place like Durban General running in a way she believes is fair and just.
