The Trump Show

Channel: M-Net (DStv 101)
TX Time: 21h30
Genre: Documentary Series

The Trump Show

When Donald Trump became President of the most powerful nation on Earth, he brought a bold new approach, honed from a career as a reality TV star and smart talking businessman.

The results turned the political world upside down.

The first episode gives us a front row seat to the first 18 months, as key players including Steve Bannon, Sean Spicer, Omarosa Manigault and Anthony Scaramucci take us behind the scenes of this extraordinary presidency.

In November 2016, Trump unexpectedly wins the US election. He faces a change of lifestyle as he moves into the White House and finds himself confronted with a whole new set of rules.

Trump sends out Sean Spicer to bat for him over reports of disappointing inauguration attendance figures, in an episode which establishes a fraught new relationship with the press.

From this moment, Trump's relationship with his audience takes centre stage. He downgrades White House briefings, and instead talks directly to the public through Twitter.

His use of emotive, repetitive phrases - from 'fake news' to 'fire and fury' - shows an instinct to connect with the American public in a completely new way.

Factions in the White House compete for Trump's attentions as he finds his feet, with discord between Steve Bannon and Reince Priebus, and Sean Spicer and Anthony Scaramucci played out in public.

Washington life begins to resemble a soap opera, and the cameras are poised to capture it all.

Trump hits the world stage, displaying showmanship and instincts for populist entertainment honed over years in the worlds of business and reality TV.

Facing a broad range of challenges, from violence in Charlottesville to historic encounters with Kim Jong Un, Trump develops the guiding principles of his presidency, proving resistant to all attempts to change or mould his unique character.

Trump's presentational style, his creation of new narratives around the very idea of truth, and his refusal to bend to Washington etiquette is changing the political landscape - perhaps forever.

The Crimes that Changed Us

Certain cases are seared into the American consciousness - they are a part of how we look at society, good and evil.

But what would happen if we could go back in time, or back in crime, and look again?

This series fully re-immerses the viewer in these cases as we experienced them at the time by pairing the best news archive with audio interviews, reintroducing these cases from a new standpoint.

Each episode shows the evolution of how these cases were perceived by the public then and how we view them now, exposing how the times have changed, and revealing the lessons learned from each case.

In the series premiere, "The Mendez Brothers": This episode delves into one of America's most high-profile cases: the brutal murder of Hollywood executive Jose Menendez and his wife Kitty in their Beverley Hills home in 1989.

Summoned to the residence by a tearful 911 call made by the couple's sons, Erik and Lyle, the brutality of the crime seems to point to a mob hit.

But behind the scenes, detectives begin to focus on suspicious behaviour closer to home.

Seven months after the shotgun murders rocked the neighbourhood, police charge Erik and Lyle with killing their parents.

And, as the brothers reveal disturbing family secrets, one of the country's most shocking and unexpected trials unfolds.

Mob Wives

All the myths, legends and tales about "mob life" have all centered on the made men who run these wrong-side-of-the-law closed societies - until now.

Mob Wives introduces four Staten Island women at a crossroads, having to pick up the pieces and carry on while their husbands or fathers do time for alleged Mob-related activities.

United by a bond which few understand, the women are struggling with their identities, their own families and their futures.

Created and executive produced by real-life "mob daughter" Jennifer Graziano, the series follows a group of suburban women who lead anything but "normal" lives, a sisterhood forged by suffering, shame and the strength it takes to start over and find their own identities.

Meet the "Mob Wives":

Renee Graziano is like any other single mother, trying to raise her teenage son AJ to be a good man. But Renee's own childhood was not like most other kids.

She grew up during the heyday of the mob, enjoying the lavish lifestyle that her father Anthony Graziano's connections afforded her.

But now that AJ's father and her ex-husband "Junior" has been arrested, she's slowly realising that this is not a life she wants her son to lead.

She now struggles to balance her allegiance to the street life with her hopes that her son will live a life that's free of it.

Karen Gravano was just 19 years old when her father turned on the mafia, a move that left Karen devastated.

She has spent the last 12 years in Arizona fighting to become her own person and understanding the choices made by her father Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, who helped the government take down John Gotti and the Gambino crime family.

Now, she is ready to start over and return to Staten Island to reconnect and rebuild old relationships as she confronts her family's notorious past.

Drita D'avanzo comes from a strict Albanian household and defied her parents by marrying an Italian, someone outside their community.

Tough as nails, Drita plays hard and is fiercely protective of her inner circle and her two young girls that she is raising alone while her husband does a second stint in prison for bank robbery.

She now grapples with her husband's misdeeds and the consequences of falling in love with and marrying a man who has been in prison for many years.

Drita is finally questioning whether she should stay with him or start anew.

Carla Facciolo had a similar upbringing to Renee Graziano. In fact, her father went to prison when she was a young girl.

Carla thought she had finally gotten away from the lifestyle she lived growing up - until her husband was convicted of stock fraud and sentenced to an eight-year stretch in federal prison.

Now a stay-at-home mom trying to make ends meet, she still hasn't told their twins the truth of their dad's whereabouts because she feels they are too young to know.

But he's getting out of jail soon, and Carla's decided to leave him and go out on her own.

But how will she do that?
