On
Diepe Waters this week:
The arrival of two-timing Tomi who titilates Tommy.
She's played by Deoudoné van der Merwe who's had roles on kykNET's Getroud met Rugby and the wedding planner comedy Troukoors where she played Inge.
She's also the co-presenter of the channel's rugby quiz show Koppestamp and debuts on Diepe Waters with
Christiaan Ackermann who plays Tomi's soon-to-be-forgotten boyfriend Juven.
These are the details on her from Deoudoné:
Q: Tell us more about Tomi.
Deoudoné: Tomi is such a fun character to play! She’s quirky and forgetful, but at the same time, she’s really on the ball.
Initially, she was very shy, but she found her voice when she realised how strong her passion is for nature and conservation. She’s also quite a serious person.
Q: Tomi has a boyfriend, Juvan, but Tommie catches her eye. Tell us more about this without giving anything away.
Deoudoné: Tomi and Juvan started dating in school. They helped each other come out of their shells, and both have grown a lot as people over the last two years.
There comes a point in long relationships where you re-evaluate how much you still have in common.
Q: How are you different from your character?
Deoudoné: Let’s start with her clothes – she has such an interesting style and dress sense.
Also, I’m not vegan. So, it’s a completely different frame of reference you have to explore and understand, and then see which of your own beliefs overlap.
Q: What have been your highlights on set so far?
Deoudoné: Not having to swim in the cold pool. I’m joking! But I really take my hat off to the swimmers. June and July aren’t great months for swimming.
Another highlight for me was being able to work with Righard van Jaarsveld again. Our characters were in a relationship in the film Die Val (2022). Diepe Waters is the first time I’ve fallen in love in an Afrikaans production again, and I get to play opposite Righard again.
Q: Without giving anything away, what’s in store for Tomi?
Deoudoné: Meeting people who truly understand her. Besides love, she’s going to fight against climate change in every which way she can, no matter how small.
