Barker Spins A Web

I’ve been struggling a little to write a column for Isidingo this week simply because there has been very little to report on. As anticipated, everything is moving predictably along.

Anthea continues to make astonishing progress and although besieged with an attack of nerves managed to convince a magistrate that she was fit and capable of running her own affairs and managing her own money.

Barker has been very much on the scene as a charming and supportive suitor to Anthea, sending flowers, taking her on picnics, playing chess and of course showering her with compliments. The latest was him confessing how he recalled what a fiery lover she was.

That brought a fine shade of blush to Anthea’s normally pale cheeks and sent her into what was probably a mild hormonal spin. Barker has no scruples whatsoever. I mean the woman has been locked away and asleep for the best part of twenty years and now to be kissing her and alluding to passions of days gone by is manipulation of the worst - or is it the best kind?

Orlando has been playing a very protective role towards Anthea and has tried hard to dissuade her from falling under Barker’s spell, but to no avail. A celebratory dinner complete with champagne was held for Barker and Anthea at the house after her successful attempt at getting her power of attorney back. Barker wanted to take Anthea to dinner but Lee didn’t want Anthea out of sight. So poor Orlando played butler, sentry outside the door and finally guardian angel as he smartly switched off the jazz tunes that Barker and Anthea were slow dancing to, to announce that "It was Miss Anthea's’ bedtime." It was very funny to watch and Orlando is fast becoming a character with a fabulous personality.

SABC3 has already been showing “forthcoming attractions” straight after Isidingo ends so I won’t be spoiling anything by saying that a proposal is in the air. Barker grinning evilly while holding open a ring box towards Anthea has flashed on the screen so frequently that it’s obvious that he intends to propose.

I never thought I’d say it but thank goodness we’ve had some of those  "forthcoming attraction” flashes. They have renewed some of my flagging interest in the current setup which as I said is plodding on predictably.

It seems that we are due to see the return of painful Kimberley complete with swollen belly and no doubt the latest addition to the Haines family. I already have some views on that but will wait until her return becomes official before having my say. The other scene that is incessantly played features Bra Fox and Letti in what looks like some seriously sexually charged stuff, of the “not exactly happy to consent,” kind.

I am very curious to see that unfold, but given the crime and rape situation in South Africa I hope it’s not too heavy.

Letti has been thrown out of the house by her father Zeb Matebane who gave her an ultimatum that she either dump Fox or pack her bags and get out.

Of course she got out and has taken up with Bra Fox at his hotel but appears to still be holding out on him sexually. An interesting comment she made to Steve was that she was in a situation where she really feared Bra Fox but was inexplicably drawn to him in a very sexual way. I suspect there will be an explosion of sorts, but I don’t know if it will all be pleasurable.

We shall have to wait and see.

In the meantime as is to be expected Ma Agnes is agonizing over the situation and is doing her best to talk Zeb around to offering Letti support, love and her home back rather than kicking her out.

Predictably Tim and his band have made it through the auditions for Natasha’s show (which was the previously mentioned “proposition”) and are now set to be working closely with Natasha which means Tim can press ahead with his infatuation for her.

At long last Rajesh and Lee have gone on a date and have progressed things back to the bedroom. It has taken several attempts by Rajesh to get to this point and has even included him having to cook.  Lee has finally started behaving like a normal red blooded woman who has a man deeply interested in her.

I have to say though that if I were Lee I’d also have major problems getting it on at Rajesh’s place. Have you ever seen a drearier place, aside from Tanya and Dup’s old flat? Rajesh’s digs give a new meaning to the phrase “humble abode.” It always looks so dingy and badly furnished. It’s really not the sort of place for a yuppie like Rajesh who dresses so immaculately and has so much outward style to be living in.

I recommend a major overhaul of his flat or the scriptwriters have to write in a fire that burns that place to the ground so that he can move to a smart new townhouse with some décor that is not such an eyesore. Even if they are on a tight budget, a minimalist look would do and would be more in keeping with the status and character that has been created for Rajesh. Hell, it might even mean that Lee would move back in given that Barker seems set to return to the Haines mansion permanently if he marries the lady of the house.

So what are your thoughts on the doings and the décor of the folks down at the Deep?
