Iain Glen is a Scottish actor best known for his role as Ser Jorah Mormont in the medieval-fantasy television series Game of Thrones.
He also played the role of rich, powerful and ruthless newspaper tycoon Sir Richard Carlisle in the second seasn of the period drama television series Downton Abbey, in 2011.
Glen grew up in Edinburgh, where he studied at the University of Aberdeen, escaping an unhappy childhood through acting. He eventually dropped out to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, graduating in 1985 with Ralph Fiennes and winning the Gold Bancroft Medal.
Over the years, Glen has taken on everything from low-budget independent films to major Hollywood blockbusters such as Tomb Raider and Resident Evil; from BBC costume dramas to a nude appearance opposite Nicole Kidman in The Blue Room and from popular British television series to stage roles in Shakespearean classics.
Glen's credits include The Diary of Anne Frank, Kidnapped, Wives & Daughters, Painted Lady, The Wyvern Mystery, and Adam Bede.
He is also known for his role as Ser Jorah Mormont in the television adaptation of George R.R. Martin's cult fantasy novel series The Game of Thrones.
