Karl Malden (22 March, 1912 – 1 July, 2009) was an American actor best known for his starring role as Lt. Mike Stone on the crime drama television series The Streets of San Francisco, from 1972-1977.
In a career that spanned more than seven decades, he performed in such classic films as A Streetcar Named Desire, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, On the Waterfront and One-Eyed Jacks.
Among other notable film roles were Archie Lee Meighan in Baby Doll, Zebulon Prescott in How the West Was Won and General Omar Bradley in Patton.
On 18 December, 1938, Malden married Mona Greenberg, who survives him. Their marriage was one of the longest in Hollywood's history, lasting more than 70 years.
Malden died at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles on 1 July, 2009 at the age of 97. He is said to have died of natural causes.
