John Gallagher, Jr. is an American actor and musician best known for his starring role as producer Jim Harper in the television drama series The Newsroom.
He is also known for originating the role of Moritz Stiefel in Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's rock musical Spring Awakening, for which he won the 2007 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.
He also played Johnny aka "Jesus of Suburbia" in Green Day's Broadway musical, American Idiot and Lee in the 2011 Broadway production of Jerusalem.
Gallagher, Jr. has also guest starred in a number of television series including Law & Order, The West Wing, Ed, NYPD Blue, Law & OrderL Criminal Intent, Love Monkey, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the Late Show with David Letterman.
Film credits include Pieces of April, Woody Allen's Whatever Works, Jonah Hex, and Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret.
