Bio
Angie Khumalo is a South African radio DJ best known for her work on 5FM, originally in the 12h00-15h00 slot and later in the 19h00-22h00 slot.
She is known to television viewers for appearing in the travel docu-series Vaya Mzansi, in which she and DJ Cleo ride around South Africa on motorbikes to unearth interesting stories – political, historical, criminal, ideological – all seen through the eyes of local people.
Khumalo has a strong background in news and current affairs, and jokes that she knows a little bit about a lot of things. Angie loves to read novels and biographies and is an avid movie buff.
You'll often catch her at movie sneak previews and she puts those insider scoops to good use as 5FM's "Zulu Maiden" movie reviewer. The feature, which is Angie's brainchild, was introduced in 2011 and has become so popular it grew in 2012 from once a week to a twice-weekly segment.
On Fridays on The Rob Forbes Show, Angie gives the low-down on what's opening at the box-office that weekend and then on Saturdays, on KrazyBoy Weekends with KB, she tells listeners what's hot and what's not at the movies.
Another of her passions is all things fast. Angie describes herself as a speedfreak, adrenaline junkie and petrolhead.
This is how Angie ended up riding across South Africa with fellow 5FM personality DJ Fresh and other celebrities in 2011 and again in 2012 as part of the Nelson Mandela Foundation's Bikers For Mandela cross-country charity campaign.
Along the route, which went from Joburg to Cape Town and back again, Angie and her fellow celebrity riders, including 5FM's DJ Fresh, contributed to charitable initiatives and projects en route.
In early 2012, Angie joined the 5FM cycling team participating in the Argus Cycle Challenge, something she regards as one of her biggest achievements to date.
Angie first joined 5FM in 2008 where she put her knowledge of current affairs to good use as a news reader. She first discovered her passion for radio and current affairs during a stint with campus radio while she was completing a post grad degree in science at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.
She started out hosting a talk show on weekends and reading news bulletins for the afternoon drive show. It seemed a natural progression to commercial radio when she was poached by local radio station OFM to read news.
During her time at OFM she was completing her Masters Degree in Molecular Biology during the week and reading news on the weekends. She subsequently tossed Science out the varsity window after realising that radio was her true vocation, as well as a lot more exciting than lab work.
Angie remained at OFM for five years, moving from news to her very own show. She then decided it was time to move to Johannesburg. She started working for 5FM from August 2008.
Angie plans to remain at 5FM for as many years as possible, nurturing her greatest passion, and is now part of The Roger Goode Radio Show, weeknights from 7pm to 10pm.
Originally from Durban, she currently resides in Johannesburg.
