James Alexander was a South African actor best known for his role as Dr Rico Maartens in the M-Net drama/soapie Binnelanders, from 2005-2008.
On Tuesday 20 November 2007 it was announced that he had decided not to renew his contract after the third season of Binnelanders, preferring to turn his focus to film and other independent projects.
He continued to appear in the show until the third season ended in 2008.
He also starred as Tristan van Reenen, the head of conservation and loyal employee of Tiro (Putla Sehlapelo), in the M-Net soap opera The Wild, from 2011-2013.
In 2019 he starred in the M-Net action thriller Trackers where he played former special-forces and ministerial bodyguard Lemmer who sought to escape his past by moving to a small Karoo town. He was credited as James Gracie in this series.
James is also known for co-presenting the M-Net reality talent competition Project Fame with Vusi Twala, from 20 June - 29 August, 2004.
In 2013 he starred in the kykNET Deon Opperman drama series Donkerland, where he played James Andrews, and he played "near savant" Gavin Winters in the SABC2 drama series Geraamtes in die Kas in the same year. He co-starred with his wife Anel Alexander in both of these.
In 2015 he played Crispen de la Hunt on the SABC3 dance drama series Roer Jou Voete and in 2016 he played Juan Antonio Grandal in Season 3 of the American period drama Black Sails.
He had cameo roles in the SABC1 soapie Generations and the drama series Home Affairs, and acted in the short films Thoughts, Lost and Voëltjie.
James died on 28 April, 2023, after a battle with head and neck cancer which he was diagnosed with in January 2019. He was 45.
