Tormented Civil War veteran Captain Nathan Algren finds himself in Japan on a mission to train the Emperor's troops in the use of modern weaponry.
But the traditional samurai warriors, in a massive rebellion, capture their Western instructor in a bid to salvage the honour attached to their ancient traditions and reject his progressive approach to warfare.
As a captive of their leader, Algren studies their code and develops an understanding and appreciation for their way of living, leading to an ultimate battle of honour against his former comrades.
