King of the Hill is an American animated comedy television series created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels which centres on the Hills, a small-town Methodist family in the fictional town of Arlen, Texas, based loosely on the real life Dallas suburb, Garland, Texas.
It attempts to retain a realistic approach, seeking humour in the conventional and mundane aspects of everyday life while dealing with comical issues.
The series aired in the USA on Fox from 12 January, 1997 to 6 May, 2010. There are 259 half-hour episodes in 13 seasons.
King of the Hill originally premiered in South Africa on SABC3 on Sunday 7 January, 2001. Only the first three seasons aired on SABC3. The series later aired on DStv's Vuzu channel, beginning with Season 3. See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times.
Season 13 premiered on Vuzu on Thursday 30 June 2011, at 22h00. New episodes broadcast on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. There are 24 episodes in the thirteenth and final season.
Synopsis
King of the Hill is another animation hit for Beavis and Butthead creator Mike Judge, who also voices the starring character Hank Hill, a propane gas salesman in the fictional town Arlen, Texas.
Hank is an old-fashioned, hardworking, beer-drinking man who is trying to live in a modern Texas world. His wife is opinionated, his son is a disappointment, his friends are losers and his Father is oppressive.
Hank is often besieged by the idiosyncrasies of society, but he finds (some) serenity in his home-life with his wife, substitute Spanish teacher Peggy (Kathy Najimy), his awkward son Bobby (Pamela Adlon) and his live-in niece-in-law, Luanne Platter (Brittany Murphy).
Adding flavour to the ordinary dish the series serves are Hank's loser friends: divorcee military barber Bill Dauterive (Stephen Root); paranoid Dale Gribble (Johnny Hardwick), who has an obsession with Government conspiracy theories; and gibberish spouting Boomhauer (also voice by Mike Judge).
Through it all Hank keeps a level head and a strong sense of morality, and by doing so keeps himself "King of the Hill".
