The Phantom of the Opera is the film adaptation of the immensely popular musical of the same name by Andrew-Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart. In turn, the musical is based on the novel by Gaston LeRoux.
The plot centers on a disfigured, borderline psychopathetic musical genius (who is indentified as only “The Phantom") He is tormented by his scarred face and lives in the watery labyrinths beneath the Opera Populaire in Paris. The terrorizes those that work at the Opera and will not stop at murder to achieve what he wants.
He’s obsessed with the voice of Christine, a beautiful young soprano and he plots to advance her career, even at the downfall of others. He initially sends threatening letters to the management and hopes to win her heart with his efforts to make her a star.
Christine is torn between her love for Raoul and her dark attraction to and pity for the Phantom. The Phantom imprisons Raoul and threatens to kill him if Christine does not choose the Phantom.
