The Tonight Show is an American late-night talk and variety show created by Sylvester L. Weaver, Jr. It is the third longest-running entertainment program in U.S. television history, after Guiding Light and Hallmark Hall of Fame.
The Tonight Show has been hosted by Steve Allen (1954–1957), Jack Paar (1957–1962), Johnny Carson (1962–1992), Jay Leno (1992–2009), and Conan O'Brien (2009–present).
The Tonight show aired in South Africa on DStv's CNBC Africa channel. It was withdrawn from the channel due to "international rights issues" and the last episode was broadcast to South Africans on 31 May, 2009.
Synopsis
A daily late-night entertainment mix of comedy with chat, the show was hosted by comedian Jay Leno from 1992-2009, when he took over from Johnny Carson.
He was replaced by Conan O'Brien in 2009.
Each show is an hour long and features comedy sketches, musical numbers and two interview guests including celebrities, comedians and musicians.
At the start of each episode the host does a trademark monologue with comedic observations about current events, the state of the world and people in the headlines.
